Is Obama Winning the Hearts and Minds of the Arab and Muslim World?

Larry Elder "Now 20 months into the Obama presidency, the question is this: After Obama's "detente" -- and after alienating our two closest allies -- how does the Arab and Muslim world now view America? What percentage in the same six Arab nations -- compared with Bush's last year in office -- now views the United States "very unfavorably" or "somewhat unfavorably"?
"The answer: 85 percent -- 2 points higher than Bush."

Everyone a Bigot?

Victor Davis Hanson "The charge of bigotry is usually expressed in terms of a sophisticated liberal-thinking elite reining in the emotional and illogical unwashed masses. We saw proof of that with the release of confidential e-mails from the controversial "Journolist" group comprised largely of influential liberal journalists, some of whom openly advocated defaming their opponents by calling them racists.
"Three, these cry-wolf tactics are now stale. A real danger is that when legitimate charges of prejudice are leveled in the future, most will shrug and ignore them."

DEMOCRATS IN THE POCKETS OF UNIONS

Neal Boortz "If you believe that these labor unions, and the teachers unions, truly have your best interests at heart .. that is probably because you grew up in a government school where you were educated to believe that from a young age. The teacher union bailout vote this week is absolutely nothing but Democrat pandering to one of their largest supporters. How hard is this to understand? There is one thing the Democrats got right. This vote was about jobs .. only it wasn't really saving jobs in your community but about saving their own jobs in Washington."

Labor, allies tee up drives for recess "Events to be held in all 50 states “will be promoted to the local and national media,” said Stephen Lerner of SEIU. “We really see this as a building block for the discussion of why the economy is in the toilet and how do you fix it.” "

Dust Regulations Are No Joke

Heritage "Realizing the ridiculousness of the situation, 21 Senators recently signed a letter that stated the following:
We respect efforts for a clean and healthy environment, but not at the expense of common sense. These identified levels [of dust] will be extremely burdensome for farmers and livestock producers to attain. Whether its livestock kicking up dust, soybeans being combined on a dry day in the fall, or driving a car down the gravel road, dust is a naturally occurring event."
Congress-created dust source  First our government creates the dust, then penalizes us for stirring it up! What a country!

Stocks plunge as U.S. trade deficit is wider than expected

Washington Post "In the United States, the Commerce Department said the trade deficit had widened 18.8 percent, to $49.9 billion -- a figure so large it sent economists scrambling to revise their growth forecasts for the quarter and predicting that unemployment may increase later in the year."

Let's Play 'Spot the Democrat'!

Ann Coulter "Lots of news stories on the scandal in Bell used the word "Democrat" or "Democratic." But that was only to say that the DEMOCRATIC attorney general of California, Jerry Brown, who is running on the DEMOCRATIC ticket for governor, is investigating the Bell officials' salaries.
"So we know the media are aware of party affiliations. They just chose not to mention it when it would require them to identify shockingly corrupt government officials as Democrats."....

"Maybe Obama's Czar of City Managers' Salaries could investigate this."

Post-Anti-Americanism

Howard Fineman "I talked to numerous businesspeople and others in Europe who had lost the awe they had—briefly—that we had elected an African-American, and a cool global guy at that. They are aware that he has lost his popularity in the United States, and, even though he managed to enact some massive legislation—on health care, stimulus, and finance services—they increasingly view him as ineffectual. “He’s hollow,” said one leading businessman in Istanbul." The rest of the article deals with non-Obama issues, but all of it must be assessed thusly: are the opinions based on either concrete facts or simply feelings?

President’s Commission Recommends President Reconsider Drilling Ban

Heritage "Clearly the President’s Commission needs to take a hard look at the moratorium to see if it is doing more harm than good. With unemployment nationally at 9.5% and the economy of the Gulf region in trouble, this is not the time for heavy handed federal regulations that will further harm the people of the Gulf. The Commission has given the Obama Administration until August 23rd and it will be interesting to see if the Obama Administration takes the President’s Commission’s requests seriously."

The Left's Special Interest Human Shields

Michelle Malkin "Left-wing radical Saul Alinsky taught his education acolytes well. Teacher organizers, he counseled, must commit to a "singleness of purpose." No, not serving children's needs, but serving the "ability to build a power base." If that isn't the dictionary definition of "special interest," what is?"

Fed Looks to Spur Growth by Buying Government Debt

Bloomberg "Federal Reserve officials decided to reinvest principal payments on mortgage holdings into long-term Treasury securities, making their first attempt to bolster growth since March 2009 to keep the slowing U.S. economy from relapsing into recession."

National Review "...the 2 or 3 percent of the population with so much money they won’t even miss a few thousand bucks. The other 97 or 98 percent will feel no pain, and we’ll be able to call ourselves deficit hawks when all those billions start rolling in.”
"On paper, this strategy may look promising. But a close look at who will pay the tab, where they live, and who represents them on Capitol Hill suggests that this approach has some major political flaws."

The latest bailout for public unions and spendthrift states. "Witness yesterday's 247-161 largely party-line House vote to approve a Senate bill shovelling another $26.1 billion out to state education and Medicaid programs. The White House has promoted the bill as emergency assistance for strained state budgets. But this unique brand of therapy drives states to spend more, not less. The "assistance" is so expensive that several governors were begging for relief even before Mr. Obama signed it into law."
