The Golden Remington Awards: Honoring the Worst of Journalism in 2023

The Remmys Select Honors – RedState

"Over the past year, we have cataloged the foibles, foul-ups, and facts-averse finagling seen in the press, and with the flip of the calendar, we recognize and reward the best (worst) examples in journalism from 2023. For this inauspicious honor, we have created The Golden Remington Trophy, a nod to days past when reporters would grind out work, burn shoe leather chasing stories, and journalism ethics still existed.

"For this final iteration, we present The Remmy – our statue of the classic typewriter, encased in luxurious repurposed 8-karat gold — to select examples of exemplary journalistic sub-excellence found throughout 2023. These are randomly ordered, but the big prize is the Public Service Honor for the most significant reporting of the year.

"So, without any further fanfare, here are: The Remmy Select Honors"

What Hunter Biden’s shocking House committee appearance means for 2024 (and what it doesn’t)

Hunter Biden Shows Up to Contempt Hearing, Stays 30 Minutes, Then Flees (legalinsurrection.com)   . . ."The GOP wants Hunter to testify behind closed doors. Hunter said he would only testify in public.

"Everything about him…I just cannot even. Hunter knew showing up would cause chaos and the cameras would be on him.

"He baited the Republicans and they bit.

"The guy loves to flaunt the fact that he is untouchable. It makes me sick."

"Austin is a retired four-star general. Kirby is a retired rear admiral. How is this a difficult concept for either of them? " Twitchy

BOOMITY: Peter Doocy Nukes John Kirby at Press Briefing Regarding Secretary Austin Health Fiasco – Twitchy    . . ."Yesterday, Kirby's Gob Bluth 'I've made a huge mistake' moment came when he called on Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy on the topic of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. Austin, as we all remember, went off the grid over the holidays, without informing his chain of command, for what we were told was 'elective surgery' and then complications due to that surgery. Later, it was confirmed that Austin was having surgery for prostate cancer. Not exactly removing a mole, is it? Probably something people should have been told about.

"Doocy, who is really the only one in the room who can consistently be counted on to be a reporter, asked two EPIC questions of Kirby.

"Let the stammering non-response begin: "

. . ."Trying to defend the indefensible is never an easy job."

Lloyd Austin at the ICU: A Symptom of a More Serious Malady    . . ."What’s most shocking about this story is that it provides a rare look inside the minds of the bureaucrats, the people we often think of as the technocracy, or even the Deep State.

"Obviously, someone at the Department of Defense knew Lloyd Austin was in the ICU at Walter Reed.  Someone had to make up the lie that the man was working at home, to cover up the fact that he was suffering complications from some as-yet-unidentified elective surgery (if it was indeed elective, that’s a story in itself, as well). Some staffers, and presumably some undersecretaries, knew the truth of the situation and collaborated to keep both the whereabouts and the potentially life-threatening condition of the Secretary of Defense a secret from both his legislative and executive superiors.

"Why?

"Why did they think they had the right?

"That’s the really interesting lesson in this story, isn’t it?" . . . More here...

"The cultivation of brainless students has been in the works for decades and the cost of accomplishing this tragedy has exploded because of governmental intrusion."

Secy Austin's Blunder Was Arrogance or Stupidity - Either Way, He Needs to Go – RedState

"Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who presides over 1.4 million U.S. military volunteers, left his Pentagon post without notice or authorization and kept his absence a secret for almost a week. That's called AWOL, even if you're in charge.

"Austin was a four-star general with 41 years of service, including tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. So, there is no question about his character or devotion to the service of his country." . . .

Biden ‘Saves’ Democracy by Destroying it ›Victor Davis Hanson

Biden ‘Saves’ Democracy by Destroying it ›Victor Davis Hanson

Democrats are tearing apart the country in a manner not seen since the Civil War era—apparently convinced democracy cannot be trusted and so itself must be sacrificed as the price of destroying Donald Trump.

"When faced with the possible return of President Donald Trump, the current agenda of the Democratic Party is summed up simply as “We had to destroy democracy to save it.”

"The effort shares a common theme: any means necessary are justified to prevent the people from choosing their own president, given the fear that a majority might vote to elect Donald Trump.

"Sometimes the anti-democratic paranoia has been outsourced to state and local officials and prosecutors to erase Trump from the primary and likely general election ballots as well.

"One unelected official in Maine, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, is a Democrat, an official never elected by the people, and a non-lawyer rendering a legal edict. Yet she has judged Trump guilty of “insurrection.”

"And presto, she erased his name from the state’s ballot.

"Yet Trump was never charged, much less convicted, of “insurrection.”

"The statute Bellows cites is a post-Civil War clause of the 14th Amendment. It was passed over a century and a half ago. It was never intended to be used in an election year by an opposition party to disbar a rival presidential candidate.

"In the earlier case of Colorado, the all-Democrat Supreme Court, in a 4-3 vote, took Trump off the ballot." . . .

Anti-Semitism and National Decline

Meanwhile, America is culturally and militarily in decline. Our mass media no longer serves the role of ombudsman, progressive welfarism has destroyed the two-parent family, and patriotism and religion are no longer revered. Most republics have a history of early demise. America has lasted well beyond the norm. Can it be sustained?
American Thinker   "I believe I was born a contrarian, and if not, at least eventually I was meant to become one. Thus, I was sad to see anti-Semitism burst into the open, but relieved at the same time. I admit to being conflicted but also comforted. Why?  Because hatred lurking beneath the surface which keeps resurfacing for thousands of years cannot be confronted during dormancy. It is virtually impossible to rally the troops to be critical of that which has not surfaced and remains below the gutter.

"Now that anti-Semitism has resurfaced, it is being challenged and may be on the way to peaking once again. Consequently, I was saddened to see far too many Jews become frightened. Rather than be fearful, I suggest Jews remember God is on our side. That was once a powerful comfort.

"I recommend they read Outsmarting Anti-Semitism.

"When it comes to anti-Semitism on university and college campuses, Jews probably made a mistake by contributing to the erection of buildings while radical Islamists actively established departments engaged in educating vulnerable students that Jews were oppressors and Arabs/Muslims were the oppressed.

"The new faddish tools of the anti-Semites are a variety of renamed methodologies that profess to be inclusive yet, in the case of DEI, in many instances, clearly exclude Jews and/or falsely attack Israel as an apartheid nation.  Among the more prominent accusers was President Jimmy Carter.

"I submit that after Nelson Mandela died, racists who also embrace a cultural Marxist philosophy, needed a new scapegoat and that tail was penned on the Jews/Israelis.

"I believe not only may DEI be on its deathbed but CRT, Wokeism, and even ESG may be on their way to their own decline if not burial." . . .

Dept. of Education Investigating Brown U. for Alleged Discrimination Against Jewish Students (legalinsurrection.com)   "Like many other Ivy League schools, Brown University has been a hotbed of anti-Israel activity since October 7th. In December alone, an anti-Israel student mob shouted down the university president Christina Paxson and more than 40 students were arrested when they refused to leave a campus building.

"It’s not much of a stretch to believe that Jewish students at the school are facing discrimination on campus." . . .

SFUSD Directs Teachers to Resources that Condemn 'Israeli Terrorism' as Worse than Hamas | National Review   "San Francisco Unified School District administrators instructed high-school teachers to engage in classroom discussions about the Israel-Hamas war using an educational resource that argues, “Israeli terrorism has been significantly worse than that of the Palestinians,” according to memos obtained by a parental-rights watchdog group and shared exclusively with with National Review.

"In memos to social-studies and ethnic-studies departments, discovered by Parents Defending Education, the district provided teachers with a host of resources to help lead classroom discussions on “war, terrorism, colonization, and seeking peace.” The first of the listed resources, Teach Mideast, promotes multiple anti-Zionist articles and viewpoints, including an article published by Jerome Slater at the Middle East Policy Council. In the article, Slater blames Israel for Hamas violence and speculates that failed Palestinian resistance efforts have made Palestinian terrorism a last resort." . . .
