Krauthammer on Putin’s Ukraine gambit

Political Cartoons by Bob Gorrell
Charles Krauthammer   "Henry Kissinger once pointed out that since Peter the Great, Russia had been expanding at the rate of one Belgium per year. All undone, of course, by the collapse of the Soviet Union, which Russian President Vladimir Putin called “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the [20th] century.”
"Putin’s mission is restoration. First, restore traditional Russian despotism by dismantling its nascent democracy. And then, having created iron-fisted “stability,” march."
"What Obama doesn’t seem to understand is that American inaction creates a vacuum. His evacuation from Iraq consigned that country to Iranian hegemony, just as Obama’s writing off Syria invited in Russia, Iran and Hezbollah to reverse the tide of battle.
"Putin fully occupies vacuums" ....
"Secretary of State John Kerry says Russian intervention would be a mistake. Alas, any such declaration from this administration carries the weight of a feather. But better that than nothing. Better still would be backing these words with a naval flotilla in the Black Sea."

Law Prof Who Voted For Obama: We’re At a Constitutional Tipping Point

American Glob   "I’ve written about Professor Jonathan Turley at College Insurrection.
"Turley is exactly the type of academic the left would have loved to trot out when George W. Bush was president. One little problem… Turley voted for Obama.
"Allahpundit adds this…
These Turley clips always get attention because it’s gratifying to see at least one scholar willing to challenge the Unicorn Prince on his “virtuous” power grabs, but the whole point of his testimony, really, is to challenge Congress and the courts, not Obama.
"Here’s the video.

"Remember when people at The New York Times, CNN and all three big networks were claiming that Bush was usurping the United States Constitution?
"The same people told us Obama was a Constitutional law professor.
"Where are their concerns now?"

'I was given every s*** job in the world by Obama': Biden makes astonishing revelations about his relationship with the President as it's claimed he was 'frozen out' by White House over gay gaffe

The former London Daily Mail
Iced out: After Joe Biden announced that he supported gay marriage before the President, Obama's team made an active effort to exclude him from meetings and keep him out of the public eye (seen together this week)
..."He went on to admit that Obama kept up his end of the bargain for the majority of their dealings, but the article reveals that there has been a definite frost between the two men that came after Biden announced his approval of gay marriage before the President.
"Two years later, the chill in their once buddy relationship is only now beginning to thaw."
"The two men met and Biden apologized, asserting that it was an accident- just another in Biden’s long history of gaffes- but insiders apparently felt that it may have been a calculated move to signal his loyalty to the progressives who felt they were being ignored by Obama.
"The apology was not enough and Obama’s staff reportedly turned hostile to the Vice President."
Where is Obama's anger at America's enemies who demonstrate their disrespect for him and, by extension, the United States?

Obama: the Pen, Phone, and Failure

William L. Gensert    "Barack Obama is a failure as president, and with a little less than 3 years before he leaves office, people are starting to notice.
"On the economy, he has presided over the worst economic recovery from recession since WW II, and the lowest labor force participation rate in decades.  He spent a trillion dollars of ‘stimulus,’ rewarding political backers and cronies, while exploding the budget line.
"Under Barack Obama, our friends and enemies alike view the president, and by extension the nation, as weak and vacillating (see Syria).
"Everyone knows that the only people who fear Barack Obama are Americans.
The Chinese know they have only the next 3 years to make their move for hegemony in the South China Sea.  The clock is ticking.
"Clearly, the world will be a much more dangerous place in 2017 than it was in 2008.

Legal Scholars Said Arizona Law Was ‘Egregiously Misrepresented’ by Critics; SB1062 did NOT say that businesses could discriminate for religious reasons.

Paula Bolyard   "The letter noted that the federal government and eighteen states have Religious Freedom Restoration Acts (RFRAs) that require the government to have a compelling interest before burdening a person’s religious exercise. The legal scholars assert that the standard makes sense. “We should not punish people for practicing their religions unless we have a very good reason.” Arizona has had a RFRA in place for nearly fifteen years with only a handful of cases and little controversy. SB 1062 merely sought to clear up two ambiguities in the existent law:
It would provide that people are covered when state or local government requires them to violate their religion in the conduct of their business, and it would provide that people are covered when sued by a private citizen invoking state or local law to demand that they violate their religion.
But nothing in the amendment would say who wins in either of these cases. The person invoking RFRA would still have to prove that he had a sincere religious belief and that state or local government was imposing a substantial burden on his exercise of that religious belief. And the government, or the person on the other side of the lawsuit, could still show that compliance with the law was necessary to serve a compelling government interest. [Emphasis original]
"Given the unadulterated spin characterizing this as an anti-gay hate bill, it would have taken a great deal of moral courage for Brewer to sign it. The truth was so obscured by the widespread propaganda that she would have paid an extraordinary political price. As has often happened in the debate over same-sex marriage, truth took a back seat to the meme. Unfortunately, Brewer’s constituents, who depended on her to defend their religious liberty, may now be the ones to pay the price."

How Conservatives Can Take Back (Some of) Hollywood for Oscar Time

"If conservatives give up Hollywood, they give up the country. Game over."
Roger Simon at PJ Media;  ... "But as you run your personal boycott of Hollywood, remember this. Almost everyone else you know — be it family, friends, business associates and, most especially, your children — is not. They are consuming Hollywood entertainment in mammoth gulps. And politics, as the late Andrew Breitbart said repeatedly (and he was far from the only one), is downstream of culture.
"You give up Hollywood and you give up the country. Game over. And as we all know, it’s almost over already. Want that? Well, if you do, you can skip the rest of this article." ....

Harry Reid’s Horror Stories

"You like your doctor but you can’t keep him. You like your insurance but you can’t keep it. ObamaCare is a train wreck.

"Koch Brother Horror Stories

"These horror stories are all lies, lies, and damned lies according to cowboy poet Harry Reid. They didn’t really happen to you. They were ginned up at the un-American Brothers Koch Fairy Tale mill to send red state democrats running for cover."
I prefer the Koch Brothers to the Democrat's George Soros , the four-billion-dollar man.

Harry Reid: Liar    "Allahpundit described my reaction to Harry Reid’s latest broadsides against truth and decency rather accurately, writing that I was “virtually shaking with rage and disbelief that this tool could say this with a straight face.”  I eventually channeled that anger — and it was genuine anger — into a rapid fire Twitter fact-check of the US Senate’s dishonorable leader" ...

Levin Tells The Tea Party to Fight Obama's Tyranny: 'Firewall of The Constitution Has Been Breached'

Big Government   "Conservative radio talk show host Mark Levin spoke at the Tea Party's fifth anniversary on Thursday morning from the Hyatt Regency in Washington, D.C. about the importance of maintaining the integrity of the U.S. Constitution..."

So much for the Constitution being a "living, breathing document". (Updated)

Update: Our living, breathing Constitution  "Many judges these days like to refer to the Constitution of the United States as a "living, breathing document," implying that its text is designed to be flexible. It is not. The Constitution is a set of rules, and like any other set of rules, it is meant to be strict and uncompromising. Of course, the Constitution can be modified through the amendment process, but once ratified, any amendment becomes like the rest of the Constitution; rigid."
"Once accountability has been sidestepped at any level or within any branch of government, the result is, by the very definition of the word, tyranny." ....
Until 21st Century Democrats took power.

Photo: This gets it right....100%
"This ill-advised idea has been around since the early 20th century."
"Imagine contacting your auto insurance claims agent following an accident.  “I truly am sorry.  Your coverage is based upon a ‘living, breathing’ insurance policy.  What you signed up for has evolved and changed.  You’re actually not insured as you thought you were.' ”
Come to think about it, Obama's pledges about Obamacare could accurately be called living and breathing pledges; his redlines and threats to rogue dictators appear to be living and breathing. TD
And Democrats in Congress enable this.

Hamburger, Coke And…Obamacare? Restaurants Now Charging Obamacare Fee On Your Meal

"Via CNN Money:"
Several restaurants in a Florida chain are asking customers to help foot the bill for Obamacare.
Diners at eight Gator’s Dockside casual eateries are finding a 1% Affordable Care Act surcharge on their tabs, which comes to 15 cents on a typical $15 lunch tab. Signs on the door and at tables alert diners to the fee, which is also listed separately on the bill.
The Gator Group’s full-time hourly employees won’t actually receive health insurance until December. But the company said it implemented the surcharge now because of the compliance costs it’s facing ahead of the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate kicking in in 2015.
“The costs associated with ACA compliance could ultimately close our doors,” the sign reads. “Instead of raising prices on our products to generate the additional revenue needed to cover the costs of ACA compliance, certain Gator’s Dockside locations have implemented a 1% surcharge on all food and beverage purchases only.”

Gov. Brewer vetoes Arizona SB 1062

gay flag
... "While the bill is an attempt to broaden who is covered under its religious freedom protections, in all cases it actually narrows when a religious belief could be used to refuse service.
"Here are six important points to understand about the just-passed (but now vetoed) bill:...
Razing Arizona: Conservatives Succeed at Failing Again   ... "After all, observers such as Napp Nazworth at The Christian Post contend that SB 1062 might actually — contrary to all the hysteria — have made it harder for most business owners to refuse service to homosexuals. This analysis may have merit and can be read here, but it’s irrelevant to a larger point:
"The GOP’s handling of this matter was a good illustration of conservatism’s fatal flaw."

The NY Times has it's opinion on this   "The bill was inspired by episodes in other states in which florists, photographers and bakers were sued for refusing to cater to same-sex couples. But it would have allowed much broader religious exemptions by business owners."

Rich Lowry: Brewer's Foolish Veto  "Clocking in at barely two pages, it was easy to scan for disparaging references to homosexuality, for veiled references to homosexuality, for any references to homosexuality at all.
"They weren’t there. A headline from The Week declared, “There is nothing Christian about Arizona’s anti-gay bill.” It would be more accurate to say that there was nothing anti-gay about Arizona’s anti-gay bill." ...

Victor Davis Hanson: Ukraine and Our Useless Outrage ;  "The history of Obama’s foreign-policy posturing bodes ill for the future of Ukraine."
... "Given Kerry’s loud global-warming sermonizing and the administration’s serial threats, bad actors abroad probably believe that burning too much coal is more likely to anger the U.S. than shooting protesters or gassing enemies." ...
James Longstreet; Author of Deadlines, Keeper of None   ... "Is it racist to note that the “resetting” with the Russians was a unilateral effort steeped in naivete?  Some hold Obama as the most naïve President of all time. Is the START treaty worth the paper it is written on?  Putin is playing shirtless macho hard ball while Obama throws high arcing slow balls (a la his “first pitch”) in his “mom jeans”.
"The world is a tinder box and the nefarious have read the Obama message of empty outrage, too often half hearted vapid indignation.  China watches."

By golly, here is one that popped up today: US warns Russia on war games as tensions mount in Ukraine's Crimea  " The United States warned Russia it would be a "grave mistake" to intervene militarily in Ukraine, as the Kremlin ordered 150,000 troops to test their combat readiness and armed men seized government buildings in Ukraine's Crimea region and raised a Russian flag over a barricade.
Well, leastwise Al Sharpton still kneels at the Obama altar:

VIDEO: Idaho Muslim Police Officer Kicks, Shoots and Kills a Disabled Man’s Service Dog

Atlas Shrugs  "Hostility to dogs is deeply ingrained in Muslim culture. Muhammad said that a dog passing in front of a man who was praying would invalidate his prayer (so would a woman passing in front of him, which is why women pray behind men at mosques). Other hadiths depict him ordering all dogs killed except hunting dogs. So this Muslim police officer’s actions were consistent with Islamic culture, but reprehensible in American culture. This cop gives the lie to the multicultural idea that American can allow mass immigration of Muslims without any consequences."
Be warned: "This video is horrible, very tough to watch. Dogs are reviled under Islam — watch this Muslim police officer first kick the dog and then just shoot the dog to death:"

Raise the minimum wage to $14 an hour using this one weird trick!

Raise the minimum wage to $14 an hour using this one weird trick!
"Democrats believe they’ve hit on the perfect issue to distract from the horror of Obamacare in the 2014 elections: the minimum wage.
"Apparently, increasing the minimum wage was not important for American workers during the first five years of Obama’s presidency — least of all his first two years, when Democrats controlled Congress and could have passed anything. (And did!)
"No. The minimum wage did not become a pressing concern until an election year in which the public’s hatred of Obamacare is expected to be the central issue."  ....
... "Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal responded that the Obama economy is a minimum wage economy. Jay Carney said Jindal prefers a $7.25 economy. The Office of Management and Budget says raising the minimum wage will cost 500, 000 jobs.
"Meanwhile, the economy in North Dakota is booming. Wages there are soaring for workers who do the one thing the president hates most – produce fossil fuels."

Welfare Pays More Than Working in 66% of States

"America has always prided itself on its work ethic. American capitalism is supposed to reward you for working hard with a higher quality of life, while socialism makes sure that everyone’s life is “average.”
"A new study shows that America has taken another step closer to socialism.
"The Cato Institute released a study showing that welfare benefits pay more than a minimum wage job in 33 states and the District of Columbia. Even worse, welfare pays more than $15 per hour in 13 states.
"According to the study, welfare benefits have increased faster than minimum wage. It’s now more profitable to sit at home than it is to earn an honest day’s pay.
"Hawaii is the biggest offender, where welfare recipients earn $29.13 per hour, or a $60,590 yearly salary, all for doing nothing. It’s no wonder they are looking to ship their homeless back to the mainland.

CATO Institute corroborates this story   "This article appeared on New York Post (Online) on August 19, 2013."

He made this argument at a national gathering of states attorneys general." ...

Eric Holder’s Latest Attack on Rule of Law Drives Talk of Impeachment!    "Imagine that. The Attorney General of the United States advising attorneys-general from the states to ignore the law based on his and the President’s political bias and leftist ideology!"

Marco Rubio Tees Off on Cuba, Venezuela and Tom Harkin

Powerline  "Marco Rubio has been in the doghouse with lots of conservatives because of his endorsement of the Gang of Eight’s immigration bill. But he is solid on virtually every other issue, and is one of the most talented politicians on either side of the aisle. Yesterday he reminded us how great he can be, when he rose to respond to Tom Harkin’s paean to the wonders of socialist Cuba. For twelve minutes or so, Rubio ripped into the corrupt socialist governments of Cuba and Venezuela, and their enablers here in the U.S. It was a brilliant, impassioned defense of freedom and human rights. Rubio’s speech has rightly attracted a lot of attention; if you haven’t already watched it, you should:"

Latest Bizarre And Racist Ravings From Joe Biden

Sweetness and Light   "First we have this, from Reuters:

Vice President Biden decries ‘hatred’ behind state voter ID laws

By Roberta Rampton | February 25, 2014
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said on Tuesday he hopes Congress will pass new legislation to modernize the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965 and counter what he called the "hatred" behind voter identification laws in states such as North Carolina, Alabama and Texas…
"And never mind that the US has given Iraq more than $100 million dollars so it can create and hand out computerized voter ID cards, in order to cut down on voter fraud."
"Anyway, try to imagine if Dan Quayle or Dick Cheney had ever said any of this. And Biden says this or worse practically on a daily basis."
Emphases in the original.

Stars discovering Obamacare is box office poison

Thomas Lifson   "Obamacare has become so unpopular that entertainment industry stars are discovering that speaking out in favor of it comes at a cost. Take Will Ferrell for example. Evan Murray reports at Mediaite:"
Will Ferrell is the latest celebrity enlisted to help pitch the Affordable Care Act to the so-called “young invincible” crowd that needs to sign up in large numbers for the law to function:
But Ferrell’s #GetCovered post on Facebook on Monday led to an acidic sea of comments — over 4,000 and counting at press time, almost all of them negative. The actor’s followers lambasted both Ferrell for wading into politics, interspersed with links to anti-Obamacare articles from Townhall andWorld Net Daily….

Do the math: if we all know Obama lied about Obamacare, it stands to reason these people are as well. Maybe now their anti-fracking propaganda will suffer as well.

Obama Calls Retreat

The Foreign Policy Initiative     "Why is this happening? Because the United States is in retreat. What is the Obama administration’s response to these events? Further retreat.
"Having withdrawn from Iraq, and seeing it now fall apart, the administration is nonetheless determined to get out of Afghanistan. Its Russia “reset” is a joke, and its “pivot to Asia” an empty slogan. Secretary of State John Kerry huffed and puffed when Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons last year, and asserted it was a Munich moment. How right he was! Kerry came back brandishing a piece of paper, and Assad remains in power."

The bottom line of this article is:
"Having failed to hold Assad accountable for the use of weapons of mass destruction, Kerry now says that global climate change may be the weapon of mass destruction we should most fear. Sure. Meanwhile, in the real world of real weapons, our military is being decimated in size as it is being enervated by political correctness. And on the matter of sheer competence in the execution of foreign policy, to say that we have a B-team in charge is an insult to B-teams everywhere."

Obama's military drawdown

The Air Force has -- but soon won't -- a fleet of about 300 'warthog' A-10 Thunderbolt II jets, which are regarded as essential for supporting ground incursions
The Air Force has -- but soon won't -- a fleet of about 300 'warthog' A-10 Thunderbolt II jets, which are regarded as essential for supporting ground incursions
The upshot of Obama's policies is that other civilized nations will have to do what the US will no longer do:  In America’s Absence, Israel Acts in Syria
... "But as we have been reminded of in recent days, Israel does not simply defend itself, it also acts to restrain dangerous extremist and rogue forces in the wider region."

Obama Consciously Engineering America’s Decline   ... "Which means that his misguided views are downright pernicious. And for all the damage the president is doing on the domestic side–and I would not want to underestimate it for a moment–it may be the harm he’s inflicting on America in foreign policy and national security is deeper, broader, and more durable.
"More than any president in my lifetime, Barack Obama has damaged virtually everything he’s touched. When it comes to American interests, he’s a one-man wrecking ball."

Obama Flirts with Losing the "Must Win" War

"The Soviet-installed government of Najibullah fell three years after the last Soviet soldier left Afghanistan—and mere months after the Soviets stopped supporting it financially. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki moved against his Sunni political opponents within 24 hours of the departure of the last American soldier, starting to set the conditions for the loss of all the gains purchased with much American and Iraqi blood. Yet Washington is full of leaks that the Obama administration is planning to end America's military presence in Afghanistan in 2016. And Congress has already slashed U.S. financial assistance to the fifth-poorest country in the world.
"It seems we are about to repeat the mistakes of the past vainly hoping for a different outcome. We will be disappointed.
"Candidate Barack Obama declared in 2008, "we will not repeat the mistake of the past, when we turned our back on Afghanistan following Soviet withdrawal. As 9/11 showed us, the security of Afghanistan and America is shared." He was right about the urgency. He was a poor prophet of his own future policy."

Obama's Historic Defense Cuts Spell Disaster

Excerpt from this article:
"The Vietnam Cuts. As the United States consolidated its victory in Vietnam, Democrats in Congress, angry at the re-election of President Richard Nixon, decided to defund the military. Where defense spending had represented an average of 19.6% of GDP during the period 1967 through 1972, the budget really began falling after 1968 and the election of Richard Nixon. The result: American helicopters lifting off from our embassy in Saigon as the country fell into Communist hands. The Soviets would invade Afghanistan just a few years later, encouraged by America’s obvious distaste for foreign war. Only the arrival of Ronald Reagan and his huge increases in military expenditures would change the shape of the Cold War.
"Overall, major defense cuts come with a serious price: the price of emboldened enemies. Unfortunately, the cuts contemplated by Chuck Hagel and company have already borne fruit in an emboldened China in the South China Sea, a resurgent Vladimir Putin-led Russia, an aggressively Islamist Middle East. The problem with military cuts is not merely that they decrease American capacity to make war, though they surely do. The problem is that purposeful and large-scale military decreases send a message to the rest of the world that America is in retreat.

"Sadly, under the Obama administration, that signal is both clear and correctly interpreted."

Obama's foreign policy credentials; can we have a do-over?

... "Putin has harbored Edward Snowden, interfered in Syria, and armed the Assad regime, Ayotte said, and it seems the reset policy hasn’t worked."
For the first time, a majority of Americans think President Barack Obama is not respected among world leaders, according to a new poll that found opinion has plunged "dramatically" in the past year.

.... "The Ukraine crisis showed how relevant Obama is. The EU ended up brokering the deal with precious little help from the administration. Our allies know the qualities of the president and acted accordingly.
"Ronald Reagan always thought that it was better for the US to be feared rather than liked. At this point in his presidency, Obama has made the US neither."
Political Cartoons by Michael Ramirez

... "Welcome to global disorder. You know America’s power is waning when the mullahs mock our empty threats.
"But Obama’s fecklessness offers one advantage — it’s easier to see why he keeps bullying Israel.
"The tiny Jewish state gets singled out because nobody else listens to America anymore. Once the Israelis figure that out, we’ll really be alone."

Beware the left; this is what they do.

Howard Kurtz   "Charles Krauthammer says it right up front in his Washington Post column: “I’m not a global warming believer. I’m not a global warming denier.”
"He does, however, challenge the notion that the science on climate change is settled and says those who insist otherwise are engaged in “a crude attempt to silence critics and delegitimize debate.”
"How ironic, then, that some environmental activists launched a petition urging the Post not to publish Krauthammer’s column on Friday.
"Their response to opinions they disagree with is to suppress the speech.
"Brad Johnson ...the editor of and a former Think Progress staffer, boasted on Twitter that 110,000 people had urged the newspaper “to stop publishing climate lies” like the Krauthammer piece."

‘He’s not kidding’: Brit Hume stupefied by disgusting argument for ‘after-birth abortion’

"Fox News’ Brit Hume pointed out a story that should make everybody ill:"
Brit Hume         @brithume
There are now people seriously arguing for abortion AFTER BIRTH.
"Hume was referencing an article at Slate outlining a hideous attempt to justify “after-birth abortion” which two “philosophers” proposed, ironically, in the Journal of Medical Ethics.
[W]hen circumstances occur after birth such that they would have justified abortion, what we call after-birth abortion should be permissible. … [W]e propose to call this practice ‘after-birth abortion’, rather than ‘infanticide,’ to emphasize that the moral status of the individual killed is comparable with that of a fetus … rather than to that of a child. Therefore, we claim that killing a newborn could be ethically permissible in all the circumstances where abortion would be. Such circumstances include cases where the newborn has the potential to have an (at least) acceptable life, but the well-being of the family is at risk.
"It’s hard to believe anybody could find a way to justify that, but there are those who try."   See below:
A Dutch baby born on Feb. 29, 2012
"Just when you thought the religious right couldn’t get any crazier, with its personhood amendments and its attacks on contraception, here comes the academic left with an even crazier idea: after-birth abortion."
