The Unexamined President and His Media Enablers

Bruce S. Thornton "The enabler and abettor of this studied indifference to the past life of the most powerful man on the planet has been the media. Partly this reflects their rank hypocrisy, the way they protest their Olympian objectivity and exalted status as the “watch-dogs” of the republic, ever vigilant and ready to expose the secret abuses and machinations of the powerful, even as they shill for the Democratic Party and its various clients like trial lawyers, race-mongers, and public employee unions."

Oil Producers or government: Who is "gouging" Whom at the Pumps?

J.B. Williams (Written during the previous administration, but an excellent lesson in economics.)  "But the fact is, the gross profit margin for a gallon of gas in America today, is what it has always been, on average, .08 cents per gallon, (2.5% at $3.00 per gallon). Though retail gas prices fluctuate with crude prices and supply vs. demand, the gross profit margin per gallon remains roughly the same at all times. (No evidence of price gouging here.)
"However the federal government profits approximately .59 cents per gallon through gasoline taxes, 7 ½ times or 750% that of the oil producers themselves and 20% of the price at the pumps. Pay attention here, Washington liberals are attacking oil companies for their 2.5% gross profit margin, while Washington is profiting 20% per gallon. Democrats answer? Tax some more?
"If oil companies cut their profit margins by 50%, it would drop the price of a gallon of gas by only .04 cents per gallon. If Washington law makers cut their take by 50%, gasoline would cost .30 cents per gallon less."
"Based upon a $3.00 gallon of gasoline, the average break-down is as follows."
Gasoline Retailer $.01 cents per gallon
Oil Company $.08 cents per gallon
Refining $.29 cents per gallon
Marketing/Distribution $.32 cents per gallon
Taxes $.59 cents per gallon
Cost of crude $1.71 per gallon (delivered)

Yes, Virginia, Obama Foreign Policy Is Ignorant and Stupid Rather Than a Conspiracy

Barry Rubin "The most common question — or remark — that I get from readers is to say that I’m wrong to talk about how Western policymakers (and especially the Obama administration) are ignorant, ideologically deluded, and unable to learn from experience. They claim that these problems arise from a deliberate malevolent effort to destroy America.
"It tells something about how bad a lot of the administration’s policies are that such a conclusion is possible. Nevertheless, it’s not correct."

Ideologically-driven strategic ineptitude "Confronting the Obama administration's assault on reason in the interest of ideological faithfulness, Israel is faced with very few good options. The threats Israel faces stem largely from the rising forces of jihad, Islamic terrorism and religiously justified nuclear adventurism embraced by Islamist politicians and religious leaders. That is, the threats facing Israel stem largely from the forces the Obama administration has elected to ignore and deny."

Obama Presents A Greater Danger Than The WikiLeaks "Indeed both are giant problems and will have long term deleterious consequences. Unfortunately, Obama’s ineptitude, lack of leadership, arrogance, ideological perversions and intellectual challenges have created a dangerous situation for America and engendered international recriminations with these document leaks that were totally avoidable if he had any shred of competence.
"Obama MUST be removed from office ASAP. The danger that he represents is incalculable. "
John Bolton guardian.co.uk, Sunday 5 December 2010

Animal lovers should stop calling their furry or feathered friends “pets” because the term is insulting, leading academics claim.

UK Telegraph  Quoting the Journal of Animal Ethics, a new academic publication devoted to the issue.

"It argues that “derogatory” language about animals can affect the way that they are treated.
“Despite its prevalence, ‘pets’ is surely a derogatory term both of the animals concerned and their human carers,” the editorial claims.
“Again the word ‘owners’, whilst technically correct in law, harks back to a previous age when animals were regarded as just that: property, machines or things to use without moral constraint.”
It goes on: “We invite authors to use the words ‘free-living’, ‘free-ranging’ or ‘free-roaming’ rather than ‘wild animals’
“For most, ‘wildness’ is synonymous with uncivilised, unrestrained, barbarous existence.
“There is an obvious prejudgment here that should be avoided.”
The preceding spawns this comment from American Thinker:  "I don't know about you, but when was the last time your dog was "insulted" when you called him a flea bitten mutt? Or your cat's feelings were hurt when you called him a "Crazy Critter" for jumping on your head in the middle of the night?"

U.S. Religious-Freedom Commission Recommends Egypt Be Listed Among Worst Offenders

GlobalSecurity.org  "A U.S. government commission has recommended that Egypt be placed on a list of the "worst of the worst" countries for religious freedom, for its record of increasing attacks on Christians and a culture of impunity.
"The U.S. Commission on Religious Freedom made the recommendation on April 28 to the Obama administration via its annual report, which it wrote after researching conditions for religious freedom in 28 countries."
We anxiously await Mr. Obama's actions in the light of this.

Carter says US withholding food from NoKos a 'human rights violation'

Rick Moran "Jimmy Carter is a walking, talking human rights violation. He is violating the right of the entire world to be rid of this meddlesome twit and his pious moralizing. No mention by Carter of how Kim and his gangsters brutally oppress their own people, making them into the most regimented, fearful, hopeless nation in the world. Instead, he takes his own country to task for not giving food aid that would end up in the hands of the military, not ordinary people."

Hysterical Attack Machine in Full Force Targeting Ryan Plan

Heritage  "The right way to reduce spending is complete transformation of the program in a way that empowers patients and allows market forces to achieve better value for each dollar spent. The only other option is to empower government to reduce costs from the top down, which would entail across the board cuts, restricted access to providers, and more government intrusion into health care decisions.

Victor Davis Hanson: Our 21st-century political correctness can have us behaving like 20th-century denizens of Leningrad or Moscow.

National Review "...we know that Israel is supposed to be culpable and that we are asked to praise the “aspirations” of the Palestinians, but if we were to go to the Middle East we most certainly would not stay in Gaza or the West Bank or visit unescorted a Christian shrine. We would wish to dine with people like the Fogels, but not their killers or the people who ordered them to kill."

Krauthammer: The Obama doctrine: Leading from behind

Charles Krauthammer  "Who truly reviles America the hegemon? The world that Obama lived in and shaped him intellectually: the elite universities; his Hyde Park milieu (including his not-to-be-mentioned friends, William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn); the church he attended for two decades, ringing with sermons more virulently anti-American than anything heard in today’s full-throated uprising of the Arab Street.
"It is the liberal elites who revile the American colossus and devoutly wish to see it cut down to size. Leading from behind — diminishing America’s global standing and assertiveness — is a reaction to their view of America, not the world’s."

The Birth Certificate

Richard Fernandez "That is all most of us have: an assertion of authenticity by normally trusted authorities. Obama’s supporters will argue that any demand for further proof — tests that we ourselves would not routinely be subjected to — is tantamount to treating him like a felon. It springs from a pre-existing bias. They would be right. The reason people have been looking for the birth certificate isn’t because they mistrust official birth certificates in general. It is because they mistrust Obama."

Andrew C. McCarthy:   Birth Certificate: Where Are the Indignant Questions to Obama?

"So, assuming as we should the legitimacy of the long-form birth certificate produced yesterday, the only thing that makes sense is that Obama knows the mainstream media is in his hip pocket. That is, he knew that he would not be held to the same standard as other politicians, and that if he acted in an unreasonable manner by withholding basic, easily available information that any other person seeking the presidency would be expected — be compelled — to produce, the media would portray as weirdos those demanding the information, not Obama and his stonewalling accomplices."

Holder: DOJ nixed CAIR leader's prosecution  ""I think the attorney general's hands should be involved in any case involving CAIR and a possible terrorism indictment," King told the Main Justice website. "He should not be hiding behind the decision of the Bush administration, because that decision was made before the Holy Land Foundation was convicted. Volokh Conspiracy  "The New York Times and Associated Press are reporting that the National Labor Relations Board intends to sue Arizona and South Dakota over state-level labor law reforms.  Both states recently adopted constitutional amendments that prohibit unionization other than by secret ballot, as have Utah and South Carolina."

What IS card check?  ""Card Check" is any process by which an employees' right to a federally supervised private ballot election is taken away. This can occur by union organizers coming to a business and asking workers to sign a card in public, or by having mail-in cards; the union, your co-workers and your employee will still know how you voted. Tunnel Dwellers on the road

We leave for Portage, Indiana, Thursday morning to stay with our youngest son and his family, so posting will be more sporadic. We do prefer the morning posting because the news is fresh, but since the TW concentrates on commentary rather than breaking news, we should still be timely. Besides, we tend to post all during the day anyway.
Since Mr. Obama likes to make news during the Rush Limbaugh program, the evening posts may be more current.
The Tunnel Dweller

Come November 2012, independents will remember the president's earlier appeals to the hard left..

Karl Rove  "It's clear Mr. Obama likes campaigning more than governing. And for this president, campaigning means knocking down straw men and delivering a steady stream of misleading attacks. It means depicting opponents as indecent, heartless people who take special delight in targeting seniors and autistic children. It means basking in the adulation of a partisan crowd rather than engaging in the difficult work of passing bipartisan legislation.
"Since Mr. Obama can't make an affirmative case for his re-election, he has decided to try convincing voters that Republicans are monstrous. As a result, America is likely to see the most negative re-election campaign ever mounted by a sitting president."
As an empty suit, just what is this man good for?  He will have left this nation bitter and divided with his time in office nothing but dark ages from which the electorate may never heal.

It took 19 months to do it, and this incredible 21-foot-long chart lists the steps that had to be gone through to satisfy all the rules and all the management and union agreements.
"The process involved the girl's supervisor, his deputy director, his director, his director of personnel operations, the agency's branch chief, an employee relations specialist, a second employee relations specialist, a special office of investigations and the director of the office of investigations. This veritable telephone directory, need I add, was paid with taxpayers' money. Who could invent a better protected job than this one -- before it came to its end?"

Thomas Sowell: The Trump Card

Townhall  "What Trump has that so many other Republicans are so painfully lacking is the ability and the willingness to articulate his positions clearly, forcefully and in plain English. Too many Republicans talk like the actor of whom a critic once said, "he played the king like he was afraid that someone else was going to play the ace."
"What electrified so many Republicans about Sarah Palin in the 2008 election campaign was that she was such a contrast to the usual mealy-mouth talk that was more common among other Republican candidates, including Senator John McCain."
I think Republicans fear any frank talk will be demagogued by the Democrats and the liberal media. And it will.

Newsweek's Evan Thomas: Democrats Will Demagogue Paul Ryan All the Way to Reelection
This is going to be one of the most demagogic campaigns we have ever seen. I think it’s incredibly irresponsible, but I think it might actually work. I think that if you are a Democrat, you want to get reelected in 2012 as Obama does, I, I will bet he will sit back and ride the anti-Ryan demagoguery all the way into reelection.            Quoting Charles Krauthammer
The Democrats' Tactic: Fearmongering  "Voters this past November have spoken: they want government to cut the federal budget and they want it to happen now. GOP legislators who are determined to return our country to a culture of fiscal discipline have nothing to fear but fearmongering itself. "

That birth certificate: Obama distracts from his other distractions

We anxiously await the cartoons that will follow this.

"Obama is apparently impervious to sound advice. For what other explanation could there be for his decision to join the carnival? I mean, there had to have been people in the White House who thought this was a daft idea, right?"

Video: Obama explains timing of birth-cert release  "Via Tommy Christopher at Mediate, be prepared to see Barack Obama the happiest he’s been in public in a long while, perhaps since taking office. And why not? In one fell swoop, Obama gets to paint his opponents as nutcases, tweak the press for their sudden obsession over the circumstances of his birth while we move from one government-shutdown deadline to the next, and act like the grown-up in the room.

The Birth Certificate – A Teaching Moment  "This doesn’t mean I don’t think the press haven’t hidden or deliberately been disinterested in plenty of important details about Barack Obama (his education, political relationships, etc.) that we should know about, but stick to those that have true policy implications. Here’s one we have all known about for a few years – the unreleased Khalidi tapes, currently in the hands of the LA Times. With the Middle East in turmoil, that would be particularly interesting now."

The Complainer-in-Chief just hijacked the airwaves for another moment of presidential petulance:
"The president needs to understand that the problem is not that the press is nonserious. It is that he has failed utterly to give it something serious to cover. The controversy over his birth certificate was more substantive than the impact of his plan because there was no plan."

White House releases Obama birth certificate

CNN  "A new CNN investigation revealed earlier this week what most analysts have been saying since the "birther" controversy erupted during the 2008 presidential campaign: Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961."
So there. That wasn't so much to ask, now was it?

Basically the media is saying, “We don’t know what the field is yet, but we know Republicans don’t like it.” What they are really saying is that they don’t like it."

CBS News Cover-Up-Gate: No Comment On Obama Hot-Mic  "We have an update on the story of CBS’s refusal to release the full recording of His Presidency Barack Obama calling American workers “Slugs.”"

Obama Calls Workers Slugs: Is Obama the New Nixon?
Bosch Fawstin
""We can't get our phones to work." Acting out his exasperation, he said: "Come on, guys. I'm the president of the United States! Where's the fancy buttons and stuff and the big screen comes up? It doesn't happen."" Oh, yeah, the "slug" comment is in there, but I thought this excerpt was kinda neat as well.

Black middle-class flight from northern big cities, failing public schools like nearby Fresno City College, where yesterday it was announced that 70 percent of students (the majority of them on some sort of federal and state loan support) fail to receive a two-year AA degree — these are just a few indications that increasing reliance on government subsidies does not eliminate, and may well perpetuate, such ills as illiteracy, poverty, and hunger.

John McCain Has a Lot To Answer For on Libya

Pajamas Media  "McCain calls the Libyan rebels his “heroes.” A year and a half earlier, in Tripoli, he described Gaddafi as America’s friend."
But remember McCain also said this in 2008:
McCain appears to concede he could lose by telling voters: We have nothing to fear with Barack Obama in the White House
Video: McCain's own words  The rank and file voters didn't buy it then and sure won't now. But remember, don't trust anyone under 30.

The Uniqueness of Jesus; Liar, Lunatic, or Lord?  "A serious study of the Gospels leads a person to one of three conclusions about Jesus: He was (1) an evil lying villain, (2) a preposterously deluded madman, or (3) the Messiah, the Son of God. It is ludicrous for anyone who has studied His life to take the position that He was simply a good teacher. Only one of the three conclusions is a logical possibility."  Patrick Zukeran, Point of View

Parents, don't dress your girls like tramps

universalroyalty.com
CNN.com  "It's easy to blast companies for introducing the sexy wear, but our ire really should be directed at the parents who think low rise jeans for a second grader is cute. They are the ones who are spending the money to fuel this budding trend. They are the ones who are suppose to decide what's appropriate for their young children to wear, not executives looking to brew up controversy or turn a profit.
"I get it, Rihanna's really popular. But that's a pretty weak reason for someone to dress their little girl like her."

Gabrielle Giffords' doctors, husband share details on her progress

The Arizona Republic   "Many other things are different since Giffords' brain was pierced by a bullet during the shootings near Tucson on Jan. 8. Her hair is short, maybe 2 inches long, says Pia Carusone, her chief of staff, so there are scars on her scalp that show through. Eventually, her hair will cover them. A thin scar across the top of her forehead is healing well and fading, and her face, though sometimes swollen, is otherwise the same as before..."

Taco Bell: Taco Loco Lawsuit, A lawsuit that makes the case for "loser pays" tort reform..

WSJ.com  "...frivolous lawsuits like this tie up the courts and cost companies millions of dollars, money that would be better spent hiring new workers or making beef tacos beefier. To discourage such lawsuits, Texas is considering "loser pays" legislation modelled on the British system, which requires losing parties to pay their opponents' legal fees. If it passes, Taco Bell and many other companies may soon be seeking to incorporate in the Lone Star State."
Taco Bell's statement
Taco Bell asks: would it kill you to say "I'm sorry"?  Good to see the business world fighting back. Enough is enough.

The Trump factor

toonpool
A.B. Stoddard, columnist, The Hill "The Donald show is becoming so outlandish — this week's developments include Trump claiming he is tight with "the blacks" — that even nonpartisan observers of the GOP 2012 primary race are beginning to feel sorry for legitimate contenders like former Govs. Mitt Romney (Mass.) and Tim Pawlenty (Minn.) and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour."
As long as Trump attacks Obama and Democrats, things are good. If he turns his efforts and great fortune to attacking conservatives he becomes a liability.

Obama, Donald Trump, and the Collective Unconscious  "Of course, the left controls the flow of ideas by maintaining a stranglehold on the mainstream media. But there's another reason: the left subscribes to Alinsky-type smear tactics.
"Progressives will call their opponents a "tea bagger" even though the phrase is sexually explicit and lewd. They'll allow Bill Maher and other amoral types to verbally rape conservative women. Conservatives don't follow suit because these below-the-belt tactics are anathema." By Robin of Berkeley

The meaning of Maundy Thursday and the Tenebrae Service

Worshipandchurchmusic.com   "The name Tenebrae is the Latin word for "darkness" or "shadows." Tonight we will experience only a small portion of Christ’s pain and suffering the day of His crucifixion. One of the most conspicuous features of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord, remains. As it gets darker and darker we can reflect on the great emotional and physical pain that was very real for Jesus that evening. Toward the end of the service, the Christ candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil over good....

The mood created sets up the Resurrection Service on Easter Sunday and this hymn is an excellent bridge from Tenebrae to Easter.

You have to be moved at this song by Dolly Parton ;  And this version by Don Francisco
We looked for restrictions on the use of these videos and found none. If there are, we regret the error and will gladly remove them. Until then, we hope you will be blessed by the songs and these two artists.
