About California

Victor Davis Hanson; Five Days of Hope and Despair. Here is a brief travel log of five days amid 21st-century California.
"If the new library is now designed as a valuable cultural nexus, to throw together all sorts of young people of different classes, religions, and races, and at least expose them to the idea of sitting in a comfortable and humane learning place, overseen by courteous and professional staff, where reading is theoretically possible, then it is a smashing success.

"If, on the other hand, it is supposed to be a place where disciplined young people individually pursue real knowledge in the liberal arts and sciences, through self-motivated and faculty-guided research, then it appears an utter failure. Does playing a video game next to the Iliad and Prometheus Bound mean that it is more likely that the video game is educational?"

Obama says he believes in small business

Geithner: Taxes on ‘Small Business’ Must Rise So Government Doesn’t Shrink  "As far back as 2011,Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told the House Small Business Committee that the Obama administration believes taxes on small business must increase so the administration does not have to “shrink the overall size of government programs.” "

Boston manhunt brought people together over desire to have a gun

Legal Insurrection  "Even most Democrats and liberals wanted a gun

This is a follow up to my post about the bitter Twitter action during the lock-down of Boston in the search for the bombers, Boston lock-down exposes gun culture divide.
"The reaction to a tweet from an Arkansas state representative was particularly vigorous, revealing more about cultural perceptions (NSFW) than the usefulness of a gun.
"It looks like the divide may be deep, but not very wide.  A substantial majority of people want to have a gun in their home if there is a manhunt ongoing.
Even a majority of Democrats and liberals wanted a gun."

Breaking Report: FBI Was ‘Shocked’ to See Judge ‘Waltz’ in and Give Tsarnaev Miranda Rights

Gateway Pundit  "FOX News afternoon host Megyn Kelly broke the news this morning that – FBI agents were “shocked” to see a judge “waltz in” and read Dzhokhar Tsarnaev his Miranda rights this week. According to Kelly, Dzhokhar was giving the agents crucial information before the judge, at the request of the Obama Administration, put a stop to it.

Quoting The Blaze:
"Regular viewers of Fox News are used to seeing popular host Megyn Kelly on their televisions every afternoon, but on Thursday morning Kelly made a special appearance during the morning to break some surprising information: according to her sources, the FBI was “shocked” to see a magistrate “waltz into” the hospital room of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and read him his Miranda rights.
"So why were they shocked? According to Kelly, the FBI was under the understanding that they would get much more time with Tsarnaev under the “public safety exemption” before he was read his rights. Adding to the shock: the sources told Kelly agents were getting crucial information after only 16 hours of questioning and were making valuable progress.
No matter.
"“It’s really unbelievable,” Kelly said."

Letters to a Young Progressive

Mike Adams' next book, Letters to a Young Progressive, will be published in April of 2013. He plans to spend the profits on new guns made by Browning and old guitars made by Fender.
....After his involvement in a well publicized free speech controversy in the wake of the 911 terror attacks, Mike Adams became a vocal critic of the diversity movement in academia. He has since made appearances on shows like Hannity and Colmes, the O'Reilly Factor, and Glenn Beck. His column on TownHall.com has earned him countless hate mails - often from radical feminists who hate males

"Make no mistake about it, though: I'm glad to have written two hard-hitting books on life in the academy. The first was needed to expose the intellectual shallowness of the campus diversity movement. Another book was needed to chronicle the absurdity of campus feminism. But my latest book is written from the heart.
"I see kids going off to college and losing their faith every year. I also see them adopting radical political positions soon after enrolling in college. I understand what they are going through because I went through the same thing thirty years ago. I abandoned my faith my very first semester in college. Later on, I embraced left wing politics that only made sense in conjunction with a secular worldview. But circumstances and, ultimately, Providence turned that all around. "

THE PROBLEM ISN'T JUST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, IT'S LEGAL IMMIGRATION, TOO

Ann Coulter  "...Sen. Lindsey Graham's response to the Boston Marathon bombers being worthless immigrants who hate America -- one of whom the FBI cleared even after being tipped off by Russia -- was to announce: "The fact that we could not track him has to be fixed."

"Track him? How about not admitting him as an immigrant?

"As if it's a defense, we're told Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (of the Back Bay Tsarnaevs) were disaffected "losers" -- the word used by their own uncle -- who couldn't make it in America. Their father had already returned to Russia. Tamerlan had dropped out of college, been arrested for domestic violence and said he had no American friends. Dzhokhar was failing most of his college courses. All of them were on welfare.

"(Dzhokhar was given everything America had to offer, and now he only has one thing in his future to look forward to ... a tenured professorship.)

"My thought is, maybe we should consider admitting immigrants who can succeed in America, rather than deadbeats"

Poll finds Pelosi best known, but least liked congressional leader

The Hill  "The Gallup poll released Wednesday found that only 11 percent of those surveyed said they had never heard of Pelosi, making her the best known of the four top Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate. But Pelosi also topped the list in unpopularity. Forty-eight percent of those surveyed said they have an unfavorable opinion of her while 31 percent have a favorable opinion."

Hope for sinners, even terrorists

La Shawn Barber  "I have little patience for people who urge empty “understanding.” What I do have patience for is Christians reminding fellow believers that God can save Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. God demonstrated His love for us by sacrificing His Son when we were still sinners. For me, this fact helps calm the mind and quell the anger.
"There is hope for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and other murderers if they repent of their sins and accept Christ as their Savior. As long as there is hope for any sinner, we can rejoice. "

Krauthammer: Obama’s Refusal To Use Terms “Jihadist” And “Islamist” Is “Comical And Embarrassing”…

Weasel Zippers  "“I say I don’t know what he’s thinking, but I sure know what he’s saying and doing,” Krauthammer said. “The lengths to which he will go to avoid telling us the truth about the enemy is becoming comical and certainly embarrassing."

The Boston bombers and political correctness  "The elephant in the middle of the room that no one seems to want to look at is that there are people in this country, perhaps many people, who have been welcomed into this country, lived here for quite a while, embraced by Americans and treated kindly, who smile at you and seem perfectly normal, and who would happily kill you as an infidel."

Fast food worker strikes spread to Chicago

marfdrat
Rick Moran  "Functionally illiterate people cannot make $15 an hour in any economy, much less one as competitive as the US. When you divorce skills and aptitude from the economics of running a business, a company will fail. The profit margins for fast food franchises is very small and even small increases in wages for employees will impact the cost of products."

"This doesn't matter to the community organizers. They are not interested in keeping companies in business. In fact, their hatred of capitalism is driving them to force companies out of business. Of course, if they are successful, the companies will cut hours and hire fewer workers - unless the workers successfully organize a union, in which case, fast food restaurants would soon become extinct. "

San Francisco Mandates $10 Minimum Wage. Why Not Make it $25, or $50?   "This doesn’t change the point of the post, which is that government interference in labor markets creates unintended consequences – namely, higher unemployment for low-skill workers."
