The Golden Remington Awards: Honoring the Worst of Journalism in 2023

The Remmys Select Honors – RedState

"Over the past year, we have cataloged the foibles, foul-ups, and facts-averse finagling seen in the press, and with the flip of the calendar, we recognize and reward the best (worst) examples in journalism from 2023. For this inauspicious honor, we have created The Golden Remington Trophy, a nod to days past when reporters would grind out work, burn shoe leather chasing stories, and journalism ethics still existed.

"For this final iteration, we present The Remmy – our statue of the classic typewriter, encased in luxurious repurposed 8-karat gold — to select examples of exemplary journalistic sub-excellence found throughout 2023. These are randomly ordered, but the big prize is the Public Service Honor for the most significant reporting of the year.

"So, without any further fanfare, here are: The Remmy Select Honors"

What Hunter Biden’s shocking House committee appearance means for 2024 (and what it doesn’t)

Hunter Biden Shows Up to Contempt Hearing, Stays 30 Minutes, Then Flees (legalinsurrection.com)   . . ."The GOP wants Hunter to testify behind closed doors. Hunter said he would only testify in public.

"Everything about him…I just cannot even. Hunter knew showing up would cause chaos and the cameras would be on him.

"He baited the Republicans and they bit.

"The guy loves to flaunt the fact that he is untouchable. It makes me sick."

"Austin is a retired four-star general. Kirby is a retired rear admiral. How is this a difficult concept for either of them? " Twitchy

BOOMITY: Peter Doocy Nukes John Kirby at Press Briefing Regarding Secretary Austin Health Fiasco – Twitchy    . . ."Yesterday, Kirby's Gob Bluth 'I've made a huge mistake' moment came when he called on Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy on the topic of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. Austin, as we all remember, went off the grid over the holidays, without informing his chain of command, for what we were told was 'elective surgery' and then complications due to that surgery. Later, it was confirmed that Austin was having surgery for prostate cancer. Not exactly removing a mole, is it? Probably something people should have been told about.

"Doocy, who is really the only one in the room who can consistently be counted on to be a reporter, asked two EPIC questions of Kirby.

"Let the stammering non-response begin: "

. . ."Trying to defend the indefensible is never an easy job."

Lloyd Austin at the ICU: A Symptom of a More Serious Malady    . . ."What’s most shocking about this story is that it provides a rare look inside the minds of the bureaucrats, the people we often think of as the technocracy, or even the Deep State.

"Obviously, someone at the Department of Defense knew Lloyd Austin was in the ICU at Walter Reed.  Someone had to make up the lie that the man was working at home, to cover up the fact that he was suffering complications from some as-yet-unidentified elective surgery (if it was indeed elective, that’s a story in itself, as well). Some staffers, and presumably some undersecretaries, knew the truth of the situation and collaborated to keep both the whereabouts and the potentially life-threatening condition of the Secretary of Defense a secret from both his legislative and executive superiors.

"Why?

"Why did they think they had the right?

"That’s the really interesting lesson in this story, isn’t it?" . . . More here...

"The cultivation of brainless students has been in the works for decades and the cost of accomplishing this tragedy has exploded because of governmental intrusion."

Secy Austin's Blunder Was Arrogance or Stupidity - Either Way, He Needs to Go – RedState

"Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who presides over 1.4 million U.S. military volunteers, left his Pentagon post without notice or authorization and kept his absence a secret for almost a week. That's called AWOL, even if you're in charge.

"Austin was a four-star general with 41 years of service, including tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. So, there is no question about his character or devotion to the service of his country." . . .

Biden ‘Saves’ Democracy by Destroying it ›Victor Davis Hanson

Biden ‘Saves’ Democracy by Destroying it ›Victor Davis Hanson

Democrats are tearing apart the country in a manner not seen since the Civil War era—apparently convinced democracy cannot be trusted and so itself must be sacrificed as the price of destroying Donald Trump.

"When faced with the possible return of President Donald Trump, the current agenda of the Democratic Party is summed up simply as “We had to destroy democracy to save it.”

"The effort shares a common theme: any means necessary are justified to prevent the people from choosing their own president, given the fear that a majority might vote to elect Donald Trump.

"Sometimes the anti-democratic paranoia has been outsourced to state and local officials and prosecutors to erase Trump from the primary and likely general election ballots as well.

"One unelected official in Maine, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, is a Democrat, an official never elected by the people, and a non-lawyer rendering a legal edict. Yet she has judged Trump guilty of “insurrection.”

"And presto, she erased his name from the state’s ballot.

"Yet Trump was never charged, much less convicted, of “insurrection.”

"The statute Bellows cites is a post-Civil War clause of the 14th Amendment. It was passed over a century and a half ago. It was never intended to be used in an election year by an opposition party to disbar a rival presidential candidate.

"In the earlier case of Colorado, the all-Democrat Supreme Court, in a 4-3 vote, took Trump off the ballot." . . .

Anti-Semitism and National Decline

Meanwhile, America is culturally and militarily in decline. Our mass media no longer serves the role of ombudsman, progressive welfarism has destroyed the two-parent family, and patriotism and religion are no longer revered. Most republics have a history of early demise. America has lasted well beyond the norm. Can it be sustained?
American Thinker   "I believe I was born a contrarian, and if not, at least eventually I was meant to become one. Thus, I was sad to see anti-Semitism burst into the open, but relieved at the same time. I admit to being conflicted but also comforted. Why?  Because hatred lurking beneath the surface which keeps resurfacing for thousands of years cannot be confronted during dormancy. It is virtually impossible to rally the troops to be critical of that which has not surfaced and remains below the gutter.

"Now that anti-Semitism has resurfaced, it is being challenged and may be on the way to peaking once again. Consequently, I was saddened to see far too many Jews become frightened. Rather than be fearful, I suggest Jews remember God is on our side. That was once a powerful comfort.

"I recommend they read Outsmarting Anti-Semitism.

"When it comes to anti-Semitism on university and college campuses, Jews probably made a mistake by contributing to the erection of buildings while radical Islamists actively established departments engaged in educating vulnerable students that Jews were oppressors and Arabs/Muslims were the oppressed.

"The new faddish tools of the anti-Semites are a variety of renamed methodologies that profess to be inclusive yet, in the case of DEI, in many instances, clearly exclude Jews and/or falsely attack Israel as an apartheid nation.  Among the more prominent accusers was President Jimmy Carter.

"I submit that after Nelson Mandela died, racists who also embrace a cultural Marxist philosophy, needed a new scapegoat and that tail was penned on the Jews/Israelis.

"I believe not only may DEI be on its deathbed but CRT, Wokeism, and even ESG may be on their way to their own decline if not burial." . . .

Dept. of Education Investigating Brown U. for Alleged Discrimination Against Jewish Students (legalinsurrection.com)   "Like many other Ivy League schools, Brown University has been a hotbed of anti-Israel activity since October 7th. In December alone, an anti-Israel student mob shouted down the university president Christina Paxson and more than 40 students were arrested when they refused to leave a campus building.

"It’s not much of a stretch to believe that Jewish students at the school are facing discrimination on campus." . . .

SFUSD Directs Teachers to Resources that Condemn 'Israeli Terrorism' as Worse than Hamas | National Review   "San Francisco Unified School District administrators instructed high-school teachers to engage in classroom discussions about the Israel-Hamas war using an educational resource that argues, “Israeli terrorism has been significantly worse than that of the Palestinians,” according to memos obtained by a parental-rights watchdog group and shared exclusively with with National Review.

"In memos to social-studies and ethnic-studies departments, discovered by Parents Defending Education, the district provided teachers with a host of resources to help lead classroom discussions on “war, terrorism, colonization, and seeking peace.” The first of the listed resources, Teach Mideast, promotes multiple anti-Zionist articles and viewpoints, including an article published by Jerome Slater at the Middle East Policy Council. In the article, Slater blames Israel for Hamas violence and speculates that failed Palestinian resistance efforts have made Palestinian terrorism a last resort." . . .

That the Democrats Are Surprised at How Disliked They Are Says a Lot About Them

 RedState

The left has become openly and proudly tyrannical. They display no shame or remorse for their hypocrisy. They gather in the streets and cheer on terrorists to torture and kill innocent people. They openly want to sexualize and groom your children, by force if need be. They assault people in the streets and destroy and steal from people and call it a virtue. They take beloved works and pervert them until they're just carriers for their message. . . .

"I've been spending a few articles analyzing the rise of former President Donald Trump and his constantly increasing popularity. It's not exactly a hard thing to understand when you stand back and look at the man and his journey from a distance.

"Trump is a person who spent a great deal of time being a popular media figure before his foray into politics. He became a well-recognized face and name, showing up in everything from people's favorite reality television shows to cameo appearances in everything from Home Alone 2 to Zoolander.

"Once he truly found himself in the political game, he became known as the outsider. Using his skills as a media figure, he made himself the center of the circus and proceeded to win the hearts and minds of many people, giving him a victory over Hillary Clinton in 2016 and sending him into the White House. From here, he's either the greatest president that ever graced the Oval Office or one of the worst depending on who you talk to, but his loss in 2020 is considered an illegitimate matter by a great deal of Americans.

"But one thing is for sure. Trump's popularity isn't all Trump's fault. A huge factor in his popularity is the Democrats and the left who will go to any length to destroy Trump and keep him from the White House, even if that includes false reports, the weaponization of federal agencies, and riots in the streets.

"As I wrote in greater detail, the left has generated the unmitigated growth of one of the most motivating emotions humans can experience; spite. They have given the American people a reason to spite them and they continue to make Trump more powerful as a result.

"Strikingly, the Democrats seem surprised by this. Watch Mika Brzezinski's reaction to Trump's seemingly untouchable popularity in Iowa with two key groups, one of which Trump lost in 2016. She seems close to tears from the shock and admits she has "no words."  . . .

KUDOS to Muslim girls basketball team in California for refusing to compete against team with a male player pretending to be female

Bare Naked Islam   "An Islamic high school in California reportedly canceled a January 4th girls basketball game rather than play another school that had a male who identifies as a female player on its team. The Muslim girls team refused to play against the boy or share a locker room with him. Needless to say, a biological male jeopardizes the fairness of the game and the safety of the female players.

Breitbart (h/t Nita) According to the report, Freemont-based Averroes High School — which bills itself as a college preparatory Islamic high school — forfeited its girls’ basketball game against San Francisco Waldorf High. Averroes officials did not disclose why they canceled the game, but sources have told Reduxx that the game was nixed because Waldorf had a boy who says he is a transgender girl playing for them.

"While Reduxx did not name the transgender player, the site claims it looked into the matter and found that the boy is taller and faster than the girls on his team and has even retained his male name, as seen on the team’s roster.
"Reduxx also spoke to Julie Lane, a representative of the advocacy group Women Are Real, and she went in person to watch a game Waldorf’s girl’s basketball was playing and witnessed firsthand how the transgender player overpowered his opponents.
“The boy had an obvious advantage,” Lane said. “[The girls] didn’t necessarily run their offense through him, probably because they didn’t want to be targeted. But he got most rebounds and was able to jump much higher than the girls.”
Lane went on to say that the girls he faced “were at a complete disadvantage.” “I caught one scramble for the ball with another player, and my heart stopped. She was more than a foot shorter than him and could have been seriously injured,” she said. Unsurprisingly, Waldorf’s girls’ basketball team has been undefeated since the boy joined.

Exclusive – Donald Trump Recounts How Ted Kennedy Once Told Him Joe Biden Was the ‘Dumbest’ Senator

Breitbart

"PALM BEACH, Florida — Former President Donald Trump told Breitbart News exclusively that years ago when he was a U.S. senator that now-President Joe Biden was regarded by then-Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and his colleagues as the “dumbest” person in the U.S. Senate.

"Trump was explaining how Biden is a “very vicious guy” surrounded by “vicious people,” but also noted that Biden is “not smart at all.”

“ 'I ran against him. I got far more votes than I did the first time. I feel I know him very well,” Trump told Breitbart News in an exclusive more-than-two-hour-long interview at Mar-a-Lago just before the new year. “A lot of times in dealmaking you know a person better if you’re doing deals than if you’re with that person all the time. He’s surrounded by vicious people, radical left people, and people that are ultimately going to destroy him. They give no quarter. They’re willing to do anything like weaponize the Justice Department and the FBI and all of those things can come back to hurt Joe and them and everybody else ultimately. There’s a level of viciousness that you don’t see. Joe Biden is a very vicious guy. He’s not a smart guy—not smart at all. All you have to do is look at his academic credentials. But he’s a very vicious guy.”

"Trump then said that Biden, while “vicious” in reality, has been able to fool Americans into believing “this image of ‘nice,’” something that Trump says a story from the late Kennedy undercuts.

“He’s got this image of ‘nice,’ when Ted Kennedy—who I knew very well, he’s a Palm Beach guy, rich family, had a house on the ocean a mile down the road,” Trump said. “I was very friendly with him for various reasons. I said to Ted Kennedy, ‘who’s the smartest guy in the Senate?’ He gave me a name I won’t tell you because I cannot stand the guy but it was really true he’s a smart guy. Then I said ‘who’s the dumbest?’ He said ‘probably Joe.’ I said ‘who’s Joe?’ He said ‘Joe Biden.’ I said ‘why is he the dumbest?’ He said ‘it’s because he doesn’t understand concepts, he doesn’t understand policy, and he doesn’t understand anything that is complicated like taxes and various other things.’ But, he said, ‘he’s hale and hearty and well-meant.’ It’s true, sort of, with the smile—you could see a friendliness there, but it’s not friendliness. Ted Kennedy said he’s the dumbest guy in the Senate and now he’s our president.”. . .

New Hampshire Attorney General Sends Cease and Desist Letter to DNC as National Party Tells Democrats the Upcoming Presidential Primary Is “Meaningless” - Vote for Nikki Haley

 The Last Refuge (theconservativetreehouse.com)

"As the DNC is telling New Hampshire Democrats the upcoming primary is “meaningless,” the background Democrat control officers like David Plouffe are telling them to vote for Nikki Haley.  The New Hampshire Attorney General has had enough of this manipulative scheming and sends a letter to the DNC telling them to stop. [Letter pdf HERE]

"Forgive me…. but I am laughing a little.   When you work as hard as we have to showcase the fraud within the two-private-corporation election system (DNC & RNC), year after year, after year, this type of stuff is just gold, GOLD.

"You see, there comes a point in the display of the marionette strings when they just start glowing so brightly, those who try to retain pretenses can no longer support the ruse.   Yes, finally, the DNC bloom comes off the ruse." . . .

. . ."PREVIOUSLY – […] “I think it’s probably too distasteful for a lot of people. But for those who would be up for it, to do something tactically—I don’t know if it would stop Trump, but, you know, it could help extend the primary.” … “I think, when you look out in the rest of the states, Trump’s clearly a dominant favorite, but in a two-person race, there’s a healthy number of Republicans who are open to an alternative if she’s the only one. So, I think for liberals, or Democrats, or independents who might not ever support Nikki Haley to be the president to cast a strategic or tactical vote, to me, makes a lot of sense.”  ~ David Plouffe

The Dangerous Pro-Palestine Protests Have a Common Thread ... His Name Is Rudy – Twitchy  "Lately, we have shared stories of Pro-Palestine protestors making life generally difficult for their fellow Americans. These protestors have shut down stores and backed up traffic. Basically, they are massive jerks. Today, Twitchy favorite, AGHamilton, shared a link between many of these protests. His name is Rudy Martinez." . . .

"Rudy wants 'Hamas', the organization that killed babies in their beds and raped women to 'long live'. Isn't that nice of him? . . .

NY girl's basketball game called off after 'disgusting' antisemitism (nypost.com)   . . ."At the end of the third quarter, her teammates were getting injured by the rough play, and “players on the opposing team started shouting ‘Free Palestine’ and other antisemitic slurs and curses at us,” wrote Bosworth, also editor-in-chief of the school paper.

“ 'I have played a sport every athletic season throughout my high school career, and I have never experienced this kind of hatred directed at one of my teams before,” Bosworth said.

“ 'Instead of responding to hatred with more of the same, we chose to separate ourselves from the situation and leave with dignity and pride in who we are and what we believe in,” she continued." . . .

This and the incidents on College campuses have been an indictment of the US education system, the news industry, and our culture. TD

Coach Fired, Player Suspended, then Reinstated for Antisemitic Remarks at Roosevelt HS Basketball Game | Yonkers Times

"The worst of the alleged antisemitic slurs was, “I support Hamas, you f–king Jew,” which came from a Roosevelt Girls Basketball player. Many of those in attendance did hear Roosevelt players saying, “Free Palestine,” during the game. The game was cancelled during the 3rd Quarter, and security walked off members of The Leffell School.

"One of the players for The Leffell School, a private, Jewish school in Westchester, wrote a letter for their school newspaper detailing what happened.". . .

Fired high school coach says he's 'scapegoat' over antisemitic slurs during game (msn.com)   . . ."Bosworth said both teams lined up to shake hands at the premature end of the game.

"Despite our conflicting feelings about his practice, every member of my team acted with respect and class and lined up to shake their hands," she wrote. "However, being forced to shake hands with and say, ‘Good game’ to people who had expressed such hatred did not sit right with me afterwards."

Jewish Stars Accuse Academy of Antisemitism (msn.com) "Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of antisemitism for not listing them as a specified underrepresented group in its inclusion efforts.

"Celebrities including Mayim BialikDebra MessingJulianna MarguliesTiffany HaddishDavid Schwimmer, and Josh Gad have signed a letter to the Academy, in which they have complained that while other groups are named, Jewish people are not.

"An inclusion effort that excludes Jews is both steeped in and misunderstands antisemitism," reads the letter, which was organized by Jew in the City's Hollywood Bureau for Jewish Representation. "Jewish people being excluded from the Motion Picture Academy's Representation and Inclusion Standards is discriminating against a protected class by invalidating their historic and genetic identity.". . .

Next blame the news networks.

The problem is Joe, not Lloyd -

  Silvio Canto, Jr.- American Thinker

Beyond office politics, this is an embarrassment for the country and for a president who looks more detached every time he goes public.

"Just think.  How does the President of the United States go three days without talking to the Secretary of Defense?

"I guess National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan did not, either.  We are talking about a time when tensions are running high.  Again, aren't U.S. forces under attack in the Far East and Middle East and Navy assets occupied with Houthis too?

"Did I tell you about North Korea, China and Russia?

"So how do you address such an obvious example of irresponsibility?

"First, you can't fire the president, so we have to wait for an election on that one.

"Second, you can fire Secretary Austin." . . .

How Obama Secretly Gave Iran Access To Billions Of Dollars — And Enabled Terrorism

Obama administration acknowledges $1.7B transfer to Iran was all cash - CBS News (2016)  "The $1.7 billion was the settlement of a decades-old arbitration claim between the U.S. and Iran.

"An initial $400 million cash delivery was sent Jan. 17, the same day Tehran agreed to release four American prisoners.

"The Obama administration had claimed the events were separate, but recently acknowledged the cash was used as leverage until the Americans were allowed to leave Iran." . . .

How Obama Secretly Gave Iran Access To Billions Of Dollars — And Also Enabled Terrorism (investors.com)   Iran: One of the linchpins of former President Obama's nuclear deal with Iran was that it would be accompanied by a near-ban on Iran having any access to the U.S. banking system. A new congressional report says that, too, was a lie.Obama and his officials at the Treasury Department and State Department were clear: They would work assiduously to freeze out Iran from getting dollars to fund its mischief and mayhem around the world.

"The Associated Press, puts it this way: "As the Treasury and State Department worked behind the scenes to help Iran access the dollar, the message to Congress remained the same: The JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) did not allow Iran to access the U.S. financial system."

"Obama sent a clear message to Congress: If you don't block this nuclear deal, we will bar Iran's access to our financial system. The deal was clear, unequivocal.

"It was also a lie. Obama lied, and so did others in his administration." . . .
