Westboro Baptist Church Says It Will Picket Vigil For Connecticut School Shooting Victims

HuffPo  "The Westboro Baptist Church, the controversial group known for protesting outside funerals of slain U.S. service members, announced that it will picket a vigil for the victims of Friday's Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the second-deadliest school shooting in American history.

"Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokesperson for the group and, like most members of the organization, a relative of the group's founder, Fred Phelps, announced on Twitter on Saturday the group's plan "to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment."
"It is unclear when the group plans to protest, although a tweet from Margie Phelps implied that it would be during a vigil that will be attended by President Barack Obama on Sunday evening.
"Members of the Westboro Baptist Church say that America is being punished for its acceptance of gays and lesbians. In recent days, Phelps family members have sent tweets about the Connecticut shooting that have said "God sent the shooter." "
It is hard enough for me to fathom one person feeling this way, but to think of him passing these feelings on to an entire congregation is beyond my comprehension.
We become like what we worship; to draw closer to the Jesus revealed in the Scriptures is to become more like Him who was always aware that everything in his life was under the control of the Father (hence the spiritual struggle I have doing this blog). This is part of what the peace of God the angels spoke of at the first Christmas was about. What these Westboro people have learned of Jesus I cannot begin to guess.
(I'll save the subject of drawing closer to Jesus vs. drawing closer to the prophet Mohammed for another discussion). TD

Seeking an effective argument FOR gun control (Posted here after the terrible Sandy Hook massacre)

The Tunnel Wall; Tuesday, December 18, 2012
Here, two respected writers discuss the case against taking away individual firearms from Americans. Yes, it is true that if guns did not exist everywhere in this nation those little children in Sandy Hook would be living right now and I only wish that were the case. But it is not and there are violent people out there in their thousands and they are armed; willing and lusting to watch innocent people die in bunches by their hands. How, exactly do you gun-control advocates plan to remove those weapons from their blood-thirsty hands?
I will honestly look for a reasoned argument FOR gun control that contains effective means for keeping us safe from those who carry weapons illegally and are willing to do us harm. Cartoons showing crazed, wild-eyed gun owners don't wash.
As yet, I have seen only politically correct, emotional responses to the issue that have no value other than simply making a politician look as if they are doing something. TD

Full post here with commentary from Alan Caruba in Warning Signs:
"Among gun owners, the cliché is that “A gun in the hand is quicker than a cop on the phone.” "
And from Thomas Sowell comes: How many times do the same arguments need to be refuted?
. . . There is innocent ignorance and there is invincible, dogmatic, and self-righteous ignorance. Every tragic mass shooting seems to bring out examples of both among gun-control advocates.

Guns, propaganda, children and Obama UPDATED

lb0115cd20130114104610
Neal Boortz; Obama Makes His Move On Guns  "Chief propagandist Jay Carney said yesterday in his White House press briefing that “if even one child’s life can be saved by the actions we take here in Washington, we must take those actions.”  How will their actions help save the life of Melinda Herman’s 9 year old twins (Audio below), hiding in a crawl space as a predator searches their house looking for them?  Lives will NOT be saved by the antics in Washington today, political careers will be."

Dramatic 911 call released in home intruder shooting  Consider what might have happened if Melinda was not armed. Take note of when the police arrived at the house: long after the bleeding invader had driven away.

Using Children As Propaganda Tools  "Shameless.  But then that’s Obama.  When he makes his gun control desires known today Obama is going to surround himself with children.  Obama says that these are children who wrote him letters after the Sandy Hook shooting telling him he needed to do something.  My guess?  These letters were virtually ALL written by government school children at the direction of their union Democrat-voting government school teachers.  Prove me wrong."

Obama Still Has Not Ordered Flags Flown At Half-Staff For #Chattanooga Victims

.Via GWP:
This Sunday marks three days since an Islamist gunman opened fire Thursday on military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee, killing five unarmed servicemen and wounding a policeman.
President Barack Obama still has not ordered the lowering of the U.S. flag to half-staff at the White House and federal properties as a sign of respect and mourning for those killed, even though he (and former President George W. Bush) did so for previous mass killings by lone gunmen.
In contrast it was only a matter of hours after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage last month before Obama bathed the White House in the rainbow hues of the LGBTQ movement.
Also, Obama issued same-day orders lowering the flag following the the July 20, 2012 Aurora, Colorado mass shooting, December 14, 2012 Sandy Hook, Connecticut mass shooting and the September 16, 2013 Washington Navy Yard mass shooting.
Obama ordered the flag flown at half-staff the day after the November 5, 2009 Fort Hood, Texas massacre.       Keep reading…

The school shooter, the aftermath and the consequences

Legal Insurrection; Mother recounts terrors of raising genius son with violence-oriented mental illness   "Progressive gun control advocates were clamoring for more liberty-crushing legislation immediately after the slaughter of the young students and teachers at Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School. Meanwhile, others cry “white privilege” because most mass shooting suspects are white.
"Yet, one critically important aspect continues to get lost in the intense press coverage: The failure to develop and implement serious and protective policies that address the needs of both the mentally ill and their potential victims."

Hugh Hewitt: The mainstream media vultures gather  "The rush to assemble a media mob is now expected and the ratings consequences to the networks of ignoring such a horror are no doubt enormous, but the intrusion into the awful grief of the families of the victims is itself sickening."

Neal Boortz: And so here we are smack in the middle of a debate frenzy over gun control --- and who didn’t know this was where this tragedy was going to go as soon as the news started breaking.
"The debate on this one is going to be furious. Obama has been making it clear for quite some time that part of his “fundamental transformation” of America is to go after our guns. This shooting has given him more ammunition than he will probably need. ...And expect outrage if you point out that people actually DO use guns to protect themselves hundreds of times a day." Boortz refers us to the CATO link below.

LA May Make Businesses Disclose NRA Ties

Brentwood Patch

The LA City Council will consider a motion requiring businesses wishing to contract with the city disclose their ties to the gun lobby.

"Saying the National Rifle Association is one of the biggest roadblocks to gun safety reform, a Los Angeles city councilman introduced a motion Friday that would require city contractors to disclose any ties they have to the organization.

"Councilman Mitch O'Farrell's motion, if passed into law, would not ban NRA-connected contractors from doing business with the city, but require them through a new ordinance to disclose any contracts or sponsorships they have with the gun rights advocacy group.

"The City Council approved a similar ordinance last year that requires contractors or prospective contractors to disclose that they have placed bids on President Donald Trump's border wall. Although it did not place a ban on them working with the city, the ordinance sent the message that Los Angeles would be unlikely to hire a contractor with ties to the wall.

" 'The National Rifle Association (NRA) has been one of the most significant roadblocks to sensible gun safety reform at every level of government across the nation," O'Farrell's motion states. "In Congress, next to nothing has been done due to the NRA's stranglehold and propaganda machine. According to an audit obtained by the Center for Responsive Politics, the NRA's spending on political activities from 1998-2017 aggregated to over $200 million."

"The motion says the city of Los Angeles historically has enacted ordinances in support of gun safety.

"The motion notes there have been more than 1,600 mass shootings in America since the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in 2012, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which quantifies a mass shooting as when four or more people are wounded or killed in a shooting, not including the shooter." . . .

A data-based solution for America’s bloody gun epidemic

A data-based solution for America's bloody gun epidemic (nypost.com)  "Tighter background checks. Red-flag laws. An assault-weapons ban. Bans on high-capacity ammunition magazines.
""Democrats push the same set of policy prescriptions after each horrific mass shooting like Tuesday’s massacre of 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Each time, Republicans claim that the problem isn’t guns, take umbrage at infringing upon Americans’ Second Amendment rights and stymie any move to even try to prevent future carnage.
""But as we suffer through yet another anguishing episode in our epidemic of gun violence, unique to the US, it’s time for a new idea — one based in evidence and data. Age-based restrictions that keep guns away from young men offer our best hope for addressing a genuine crisis and saving lives.
""There is one glaring connection between the Uvalde massacre and the racist shooting of 10 at a Buffalo supermarket on May 14: Both shooters were 18-year-old men. And this isn’t unusual. The shooter who killed 17 at a Florida high school in 2018? A 19-year-old man. The killer who ended nine lives in a Charleston, SC, church in 2015? A 21-year-old man. And it was a 20-year-old man who took 26 lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in 2012, only months after a 24-year-old man killed 12 and wounded 58 in Aurora, Colo.
""This pattern isn’t limited to mass shootings. While those between the ages of 14 and 24 constituted a little more than 16% of the population between 1980 and 2008, they were responsible for over 48% of the murders. Overall, those 18 to 24 consistently had the highest offending rate over the 28-year period. And the overwhelming majority of those responsible for homicides were male.
"The rate of suicide attempts is also highest between ages 14 and 21.
" 'There are good reasons for these statistics: The frontal lobe and other parts of the brain responsible for impulse and emotional control and judgment do not fully mature until roughly age 25 or 26. Additionally, 75% of people who develop psychiatric disorders will do so by 24, while the peak onset of psychotic disorders in men is just under 25.". . .

In case you had been wondering after the Boston bombing manhunt: Keeping Your Family Safe During a Terrorist Attack

Noisy Room   "A series of studies conducted by researchers at the National Center for Disaster Preparedness show that while 72% of Americans anticipate future terror attacks, fewer than 50% of us have a family emergency plan in place. It is not likely that any of us will forget the images of the families who were affected during the Boston bombing, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, or the Aurora, Colorado, movie theater shooting."

The Seven Signs of Terrorism
"Fearing future terrorist attacks does not mean that people have to live in fear every day. There are several steps people may take to help prepare and protect their families. One such action is to become familiar with the Seven Signs of Terrorism, developed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York, that have been adopted by State Police across the country as an educational tool."

Trump Hits Back At Media After Accusations Of Inciting Two Mass Shootings

Did the press blame Obama for the horror of Sandy Hook?

Daily Wire  "President Donald Trump hit back against the news media on Monday after he was consistently blamed for causing the pair of mass shootings that occurred over the weekend."  . . .

The Media has a big responsibility to life and safety in our Country. Fake News has contributed greatly to the anger and rage that has built up over many years. News coverage has got to start being fair, balanced and unbiased, or these terrible problems will only get worse!
"The president’s remarks come on the heels of two recent mass shootings that took place less than one day apart. On Saturday, a gunman opened fire in a Walmart shopping complex in El Paso, Texas, murdering at least 20 individuals and injuring more than two dozen others. A second attacker took the lives of nine people and injured nearly 30 others after he gunned down people in a Dayton, Ohio bar early Sunday morning.
"Democratic lawmakers and the news media have repeatedly accused the president of stoking racism and inciting violence since taking office. Only hours after the first shooting garnered national attention, the left-wing of the aisle began to point fingers at Trump for causing the tragedy." . . .

Newtown, Conn. School District Had Recently Installed New Safety Protocols

CBS New York  "In the wake of the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Conn., that left more than two dozen people dead, including 18 children, CBS 2 has learned the school district had just installed a new safety policy designed to prevent situations such as what happened on Friday.

"At approximately 9:41 a.m. a gunman opened fire inside Sandy Hook Elementary School. Early reports indicated one child and the gunman, who has not been identified yet, were killed, but later the horror of what actually took place started to come to the surface. It was later learned a second person connected to the massacre was taken into custody, but the specifics of who he is and how he was possibly connected to the tragedy were not immediately known."

Roseburg, OR: "Forget the Zero; Remember the Hero"

    Victory Girls Blog

    Cal @calumtrail
People always remember the shooter and never the hero. REMEMBER: Chris Mintz who took *five bullets trying to stop the shooter.
"Chris Mintz, 30, was in his first week of class at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, on Thursday when a man, identified by officials as 26-year-old [name deleted], walked into Snyder Hall, where classes are held, and started shooting.

"Mintz reportedly tried “to block the door to keep the gunman from coming in,” Mintz’s aunt, Wanda Mintz, told Q13 Fox News in Oregon.
    . . .
Most of all, Chris’s focus was on his son, Tyrik. In fact, the reason Chris is living in Oregon was to help raise his boy. As he lay wounded after the gunman shot him *5 times, his only thoughts were of his son.
    . . .
"As Chris recovers from his gunshot wounds, starts the process of learning to walk again, and hugs his son close – it is worth reading something he wrote on Facebook just a few weeks ago." . . .*Other reports say seven times.

    "You're not getting by me."
. . . "According to Fox 8, when the gunman tried to enter Mintz’s class, Mintchris mintzz told the students in his classroom to get to a safe place, then said to the shooter “you’re not getting by me”:

“At that point, the shooter shot him five times and the shooter moved on and apparently didn’t go in to that classroom,” Pastor Dennis Kreiss told People. ”I applaud the guy’s heroism. He may have saved the people in that classroom.”
    . . .  "Mintz’s cousin Ariana Earnhardt told Fox 8:

"His vital signs are OK. He’s going to have to learn to walk again, but he walked away with his life and that’s more than so many other people did."

Alan Caruba in Warning Signs"Among gun owners, the cliché is that “A gun in the hand is quicker than a cop on the phone.” "
" “This means that, each year, firearms are used 60 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives. Furthermore, of the 2.4 million self-defense cases, more than 192,000 are by women defending themselves against sexual assault. And in less than eight percent of those occasions is a shot actually fired. The vast majority of the time (92%), the mere presence of a firearm helps to avert a major crime from occurring. That is what Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD) concluded after extensive research. According to Rep. Bartlett, the number of defensive uses is four times the number of crimes reported committed with guns.” "
Thomas Sowell in National Review Online: "How many times do the same arguments need to be refuted?"

Israel and Gun Violence; why gun violence is less common in Israel–where many carry guns openly–than in the U.S.:

By Alana Goodman at Commentary Magazine; "Most of the mass shootings that have taken place in Israel were related to the conflict in the region... at least two of these firearm terrorist attacks occurred at schools (both yeshivas). In both cases, the gunmen were not given the chance to end their own lives. They were killed by people at the schools who had guns."....

Goodman links to this article from Tablet Magazine, saying the author, Liel Leibovitz takes a look at why gun violence is less common in Israel–where many carry guns openly–than in the U.S.:
It’s the Jewish state’s gun culture, not its laws, that prevents mass shootings like the one in Connecticut
Israeli girls wear automatic rifles as they dance together during the celebrations for Independence Day in Jerusalem on April 19, 2010.

"The first and most universal one is that ever more stringent gun control is bad policy: As is the case with drugs, as was the case with liquor during Prohibition, the strict banning of anything does little but push the market underground into the hands of criminals and thugs. Rather than spend fortunes and ruin lives in a futile attempt to eradicate every last trigger in America, we would do well to follow Israel’s example and educate gun owners about their rights and responsibilities, so as to foster a culture of sensible and mindful gun ownership."
...." “An armed society,” Nedivi wrote, quoting the science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein, “is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.” It may be a bit odd to think of Israeli society as polite, but when it comes to guns it is, and for just the reason articulated by Heinlein: When everyone has a gun, guns are no longer seen as talismans by weak, frightened, and unstable men seeking a sense of self-validation, but as killing machines that are to be handled with the utmost caution and care."
Can't argue with that. Goodman concludes with this:
I'm sorry that many will find this poster offensive. I just ask
that you give me an argument against it if you can. I only
wish one of the adults killed at the school had been armed.
"That’s definitely not to argue that arming more people is a solution to mass shootings in America. Israel is different because many of the people who carry guns in public are trained soldiers, and military service is mandatory for almost everyone. The heroes who stopped the gunmen at the yeshivas were reportedly all either soldiers or enrolled in pre-military preparatory programs. But it also contradicts the notion that fewer guns equals more safety. There may be policy responses to the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting that could be helpful in small ways–a review of mental health treatment in this country is warranted, and even a debate about gun laws isn’t a bad idea. But there are no obvious, all-encompassing solutions and anyone who argues otherwise is selling something."

Are mass murderers always insane? Researchers don't think so

UK Independent   File under "They know this because....?"

" 'In almost all high-end mass killings, the perpetrator’s thinking evolves,' says one expert"

If what people do is any reflection of who they are, then Devin Patrick Kelley, who slaughtered 26 churchgoers on Sunday in Texas, surely was a madman.
Before the atrocity, he had attempted to sneak weapons onto an Air Force base after making death threats to his superiors, according to a local police report. In 2012, he had escaped from a mental hospital in New Mexico to which he had been sent after assaulting his wife and fracturing his stepson’s skull.
"A video of the church killing reportedly shows Mr. Kelley working his way methodically through the aisles, shooting some parishioners, even children, at point-blank range.
"But the rest of these murderers do not have any severe, diagnosable disorder. Though he was abusive to his wife, Omar Mateen, who killed 49 people in an Orlando nightclub, had no apparent serious mental illness. Neither did Stephen Paddock, who mowed down 58 concertgoers from a hotel window in Las Vegas."
"Ditto for Dylann Roof, the racist who murdered nine African-American churchgoers in South Carolina in 2015, and Christopher Harper-Mercer, the angry young man who killed nine people at a community college in Oregon the same year." . . .
"Adam Lanza, who in 2012 killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., exhibited extreme paranoia in the months leading up to his crime, isolating himself in his room."

    If our liberals ruled Israel...

This man who stopped the Muslim attacker would have been unarmed:

    AP/Amarillo Globe-News, Michael Schumacher

. . . "WaPo points to a study by Mother Jones that claims that high-profile shootings began increasing in gun-free zones in late 2011/early 2012. The examples Mother Jones provides are the Aurora movie theater, Sandy Hook Elementary, and the D.C. Navy Yard, all of which were gun-free zones.
"Other examples of shootings in gun-free zones that could have been cited are Arapahoe High School (December 2013), Fort Hood (April 2014), Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church (June 2015), Chattanooga military offices (July 2015), the Lafayette Grand Theatre (July 2015), and Umpqua Community College (October 1).
"Increases in gun ownership correlated with drastic reductions in firearm-related homicides, but creating zones where law-abiding citizens are denied the ability to be armed for self-defense have allowed high-profile attackers to find easy targets."

. . . "Serious question for gun control advocates: If radical Islamist terrorists aren't deterred by laws against murder and bomb-making, in what way would tighter gun laws stand in their way? The primary San Bernadino shooter was a US citizen and government employee with a clean record. The guns used were purchased legally.  . . . Reports indicate that police didn't arrive on the scene after until the bloodbath was over.  If you're advocating an unconstitutional, impractical confiscation regime, please say so."

    Get Rittenhouse!

Ann Coulter....Editor's note: This column contains graphic language.

"In his prosecution of Kyle Rittenhouse, Kenosha County Assistant District Attorney Thomas Binger drew so many well-earned rebukes from the judge that some speculated he was intentionally going for a mistrial.

"Nope. He was fighting like a banshee. He just has a really bad case.

"Of course, it was his own decision to charge the then-17-year-old Rittenhouse with murder for shooting three psychopathic criminals who were attacking him at the BLM/antifa riots in Kenosha last year. (That, by the way, is a more accurate summary of the evidence than anything Binger said.)

"In his closing argument, Binger decided to ignore his loser case and argue an entirely different case, for which no evidence had been adduced. Binger posited that Rittenhouse was an "active shooter" -- like at Sandy Hook Elementary or Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

"Forget that Rittenhouse was not at a grade school, but in the middle of a riot that did $50 million in damage to the town of Kenosha. Forget that rioters were beating up random people they encountered, including a 71-year-old man protecting a mattress store from being looted, who had his jaw and nose broken by a water bottle filled with concrete -- hurled by "unarmed" protesters.". . .
