As with "gravitas", here's a new word you will hear every channel use to the point of nausea

Polar Vortex! And it even has a name! And it will kill us all in ten years!
140107-polar-vortex-cartoon
"Until it got really cold this week I had never heard of a polar vortex. Thanks to The Weather Channel I’ve learned it means we swapped weather with Fairbanks.
"Same goes for a Derecho, which I learned last summer means rain storm.
I’ve also learned The Weather Channel has acquired naming rights to the weather. This week’s polar vortex is named Ion."  Chip Bok.

The Polar Vortex: Best Late-Night Jokes  "Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon and Jay Leno were among those who poked fun at the frigid temperatures."
... "That was followed by a series of "How cold is it?" jokes, with Leno offering up zingers like "It is so cold, most of the country has numbers lower than President Obama" ...

Stephen Colbert: "As a newsman, I want to salute whoever came up with the term 'polar vortex,' " Colbert said. "It is terrifying but still sounds all science-y. A lesser meteorologist could have overreached with 'arctic coldnado' or 'alaskan dick punch,' but 'polar vortex' is restrained but menacing."

Silly you! Of course global warming is behind frigid temps  "Can we please stop equating "weather" with "climate?" It will probably be another two decades before we're this cold again. And next year, when it's possible we will experience warmer winter weather than normal, you can bet the global warming advocates will be out in force claiming it as proof that global warming is "real.' "

Survivors of the Blizzard of ’78 Mock the ‘Arctic Vortex’  "My personal reaction to the wall-to-wall news coverage of this “dangerous weather event” has been something along the lines of “seriously?”
Why all this derision — even hostility — simply because the schools and some businesses wanted the public to stay home for a couple of days until this cold weather blew over?
"Quite simply, Ohioans of a certain age remember January 26, 1978, the day the Great Blizzard of ’78, also known as the White Hurricane, also known as the Cleveland Superbomb, descended upon Ohio."

Not showing off; I had to look up "vortex" and figured you might want to as well.
Vortex; "In fluid dynamics, a vortex is a region within a fluid where the flow is mostly a spinning motion about an imaginary axis, straight or curved. That motion pattern is called a vortical flow." ....

The Outlaw Campus; The university has become a rogue institution in need of root-and-branch reform.

Victor Davis Hanson   ... "Not now. Colleges have gone rogue and become virtual outlaw institutions. Graduates owe an aggregate of $1 trillion in student debt, borrowed at interest rates far above home-mortgage rates — all on the principle that universities could charge as much as they liked, given that students could borrow as much as they needed in federally guaranteed loans."...
....
"Here are ten areas that need radical reform..."
....
3. Curriculum.  ...  "The result was advocacy, not disinterested empiricism. Nationwide, thousands of traditional classes in history, philosophy, literature, and the social sciences gave way to ethnic studies, women’s studies, leisure studies, gender studies, peace studies, environmental studies, etc. ... It was also nearly impossible to do well in these courses for a student who disagreed with the political assumptions of the advocate faculty. “Studies” contributed in no small part to the unfortunate emergence of the arrogant and ignorant graduate, who left the campus zealous for social change but sadly without the skills to even articulate his goals."
Emphasis added, TD

Case in point: Far Left Demagogue Harry Belafonte to Speak at U. Michigan on Martin Luther King Day
The Ann Arbor Journal gave us this example of "advocacy" ... "Other symposium events on Jan. 20 include discussions on “The Power of Protest: Black Student Activism at the University of Michigan” and “From Martin Luther King to Tupac Shakur: Implications of Hip Hop for Graduate Education, Pedagogy, and Engaged Scholarship” and a screening of the movie “42,” among other activities."  Hat tip to College Insurrection

Are Our Children Actually Learning Anything in School Today?  "Finally, Ryan Rotela, a Florida Atlantic University student, is accusing an instructor and local Democratic party leader of suspending him for refusing to stomp on a piece of paper with the word “Jesus” written on it.  This “exercise” was part of an intercultural communications class (whatever that means) and was supposed to encourage discourse.  Could you imagine if a student was told to stomp on the name “Mohammed” or even “Obama”?  Fortunately, Ryan has received an apology but the instructor has been put on administrative leave for “safety reasons” whatever that means. "

The President's war on inequality

Obama to preview anti-poverty proposals  "President Obama will look to promote economic proposals designed to alleviate blight in some of the nation’s poorest communities at an event Thursday at the White House, according to a source familiar with the event."

Signs and Wonders: Even the best intentions can’t end poverty  "...  India—a country with 1.2 billion people, one-sixth of the world’s population—had officially moved from the list of “poor” nations to the list of “middle income” nations. The question one has to ask is: Why? The answers to that question are democracy, capitalism, and Christianity, all of which—in India’s case—were the legacy of British colonialism. And so it has been around the globe."

Alan Caruba: Obama's 2014 Big Lie: Income Inequality   ... "His objective is to further divide Americans by promising what government cannot and should not deliver. This is now the Democratic Party theme leading up to the midterm elections in November. He is right about one thing, only economic growth can provide the opportunity for Americans to increase their personal incomes, provide a choice of investments, and save more for the future. In his first five years in office, economic growth has been historically slow."

Out: "Global Warming"; in: "Climate Change".

Global Warming on Ice

'Polar Vortex' Scaremongering  ... "The Leftmedia is having a field day with this week's furious Arctic outbreak across a large portion of the U.S., thanks to what is alarmingly being called the “polar vortex.” Climate alarmists were quick to blame the cold snap on variable weather patterns being created by man-made global warming. The Weather Channel wondered, “Is The Record Cold Arctic Outbreak Tied To Global Warming”? while CBS' Charlie Rose asked, “Is it definitely connected to global warming?' ” ...

Alan Caruba: Obama's "Climate Change" Lies
... "You can forget about “climate change”, but you should keep in mind what the President is doing to bankrupt America and deny it the production of the energy it needs as the weather gets colder."
Political Cartoons by Lisa Benson
Silly you! Of course global warming is behind frigid temps    "We should beg the pardon of global warming advocates for ever doubting them. The record shattering cold being experienced by yours truly and hundreds of millions of other Americans is obviously due to greenhouse gas emissions making the arctic warmer, which changes the jet stream, which actually makes us colder, which doesn't mean that global warming is a crock - except when it does. Or something."   Rick Moran
Political Cartoons by Chip Bok
Al Gore's Nightmare Intensifies    "And now comes the launch of the Global Cooling Awareness Project."
....
"Those who put their faith in computer models that have been unable to predict the last 15 years are charlatans. I remain agnostic on what lies ahead."

Forbes: Earth Day Musings  ... " Danson thinks we should all eat “Wild ocean fish”. The queston of how the ships get out to the remote fishing grounds, how they refrigerate the fish, and how much CO-2 that all creates, is left unanswered. Last time I checked, North Atlantic salmon cost at least twice as much as farm-raised, but I assume Danson is well off thanks to his day job."

Gore: Polar Ice Could Disappear By 2014

Political Cartoons by Eric Allie
Here too, from 2009: Al Gore: Polar Ice Caps will melt in 5-7 years   "New computer modeling suggests the Arctic Ocean may be nearly ice-free in the summertime as early as 2014, Al Gore said Monday at the U.N. climate conference. This new projection, following several years of dramatic retreat by polar sea ice, suggests that the ice cap may nearly vanish in the summer much sooner than the year 2030, as was forecast by a U.S. government agency eight months ago.

"One U.S. government scientist Monday questioned the new prediction as too severe, but other researchers previously have projected a quicker end than 2030 to the Arctic summer ice cap."...

A U.S. government agency predicted the melting of the polar ice cap in the year 2030. However, climate guru Al Gore said at the U.N. climate conference on Monday that new computer modeling indicates this could happen as soon as 2014.
One U.S. government scientist on Monday said the new prediction was too severe, but other researchers have previously projected a quicker end than 2030 to the Arctic summer ice cap.
Former U.S. Vice President Gore said, “It is hard to capture the astonishment that the experts in the science of ice felt when they saw this.”
Gore and a group of Scandinavian officials and scientists have come together for the two-week conference.

Polygamy and Phil Robertson

The American Culture  "It seems that those who championed the redefinition of marriage to make gender arbitrary are now starting to get exactly what they said wouldn’t happen, the old slippery slope to polygamy. It is of course the logical conclusion of their position, and with a recent court ruling on polygamy in Utah the conclusion is coming to fruition. You can find the details in this WSJ article titled, “America’s Polygamous Future.”

"I can’t tell you how many articles and blogs I’ve read over the last several years where someone who was arguing for redefining marriage to include people of the same gender argued just as strongly against polygamy. Their problem is that it simply can’t be had both ways."
In sum:
... "So my question: since marriage is now obviously a malleable social institution, is it not unfair and unjust to outlaw polygamy? By what principal would anyone be able to say polygamy should be outlawed? What makes two so special that marriage should be limited to that number? If marriage is open to definition I dare anyone who supports same gender marriage to prove otherwise?"

Even Mainstream Media Turns on Obama

The American Culture  "We call this mainstream media bias. It seems, though, that the Obamacare disaster has not only soured the American people on the president, but even the mainstream media has become critical. The many egregious blunders and power grabs of this administration have even become too much for them to ignore. A shocking headline I read recently in the quintessential mainstream media organ, The New York Times, brought this home: “Obama’s Orwellian Image Control.” And there have also been recent stories of anger in the White House press corps regarding access for photographers. I also heard, amazingly enough, a story on NPR about what a horrible year it has been for Obama."

Terrorists Take Fallujah; Obama Doesn’t Care

Powerline   "The Obama administration has been disgraceful in so many ways that it is hard to keep track of them all, but surely one of the worst is its treatment of Iraq. Following his inauguration, President Obama withdrew troops from Iraq on the timetable that had been agreed to by the Bush administration. But as the draw-down continued, and it became apparent that security would worsen dangerously in the absence of American power, he refused to consider leaving even a small contingent of troops to help the Iraqi government resist terrorist forces. The result is that Iraq, like Syria, Egypt and Libya, has been under siege by Islamic terrorists."

Noisy Room

NY Judge Orders 'Compassionate Release' Of Terror Lawyer Lynne Stewart
"The request said that Stewart was entitled to a compassionate release because she had been diagnosed with a terminal, incurable illness, and given less than 18 months to live."

Learning from Lynne Stewart  "Sharon Chadha did a good job of telling Stewart’s story in “Lynne Stewart, jihadi lawyer.” It is a story that illustrates the weird convergence between radical Islam and the radical left, united in their hatred of the United States."

From Middle East Quarterly in 2006:  Lynne Stewart, Jihadi Lawyer   "The
charges against Stewart are an epilogue to the conviction of her client. Many Americans first learned of the blind sheikh when, on February 26, 1993, his followers drove a truck bomb into the World Trade Center. Though the explosion was not as destructive as they planned—Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind, said that he had hoped to kill some 250,000 people—it still left six dead and injured over 1,000 people."

What's with MSNBC, anyway?

Romney: Apology accepted, but …   "As expected, Mitt Romney took the high road on Fox News Sunday regarding MSNBC’s attack on his family and Melissa Harris-Perry’s apology – but not without a bit of scolding from both Romney and Fox News anchor Chris Wallace." ...

Rachel Maddow is part of the new matriarchy running NBC News behind the scenes.   ... "Few, though, suspect that Harris-Perry will suffer the same fate as her less fortunate colleagues, and MSNBC declined to comment on the matter. That’s because Harris-Perry is part of Maddow’s in-crowd, the liberal, wonkish elite now ascendant at MSNBC.
"Sources say it is Maddow rather than Phil Griffin who provides MSNBC’s editorial direction, and that she also holds considerable sway over personnel decisions." ...

After Harris-Perry Apologized for Racist Romney Comment, MSNBC Renews Claim Tea Party is Racist  ... "On the same show that host Melissa Harris-Perry was forced to apologize for her attack on Mitt Romney's adopted African-American grandson, MSNBC kept up its drumbeat of dealing the race card against its enemies by declaring that the core of tea party is racist."

Kurtz: 'Has MSNBC Developed a Culture in Which Harsh Personal Attacks Are Encouraged?'  "Since that point, the format of "Shoot first, ask questions later" has moved throughout the network's primetime lineup as hosts seem to compete for who can be the most inflammatory.
"Even worse, people such as Chris Matthews - who used to actually be quite a fine host when Hardball began in the '90s on CNBC - bear absolutely no resemblance to their prior on-air personas."

The National Debt in One Picture

Heritage   "Congress is beginning its new year with a budget deal that busts right through “caps” it was supposed to have on spending. At Heritage, we want to hold Congress accountable for its tax-and-spend ways, even as Members claim there’s no room to cut.
"A good place to start is understanding the mountain of debt Americans are already under. Check out and share our infographic below that puts it in perspective."
