Radicalism Rebranded: Is New York City’s ‘Mamdani Moment’ America’s Problem?

"Even foreign policy has been affected. Groups once universally condemned as terrorist organizations, like Hamas, have been rebranded in activist spaces as “resistance” movements, sheltering under the umbrella of Progressive intersectionality."
"Many Americans are asking how we reached a point where lawlessness, anti-Americanism, and open sympathy for terrorists are not only tolerated but celebrated—and where mayoral candidates who would once have been considered “fringe” can win primaries in major cities. The answer? Since the 1960s, the United States has undergone one of the most dramatic political rebrandings in modern history, particularly on the Left. The sixties radicals never disappeared. Their ideas, once considered extreme, have not only resurfaced, they’ve been rebranded. Today, extremism is marketed to new generations as compassionate, inclusive, and enlightened, marching under the “progressive” banner and embraced by a growing bloc of post-9/11, college-educated voters.
"However, while the rhetoric has softened, the underlying ideology and its mission remain unchanged. Indeed, the label “Progressive” is itself a branding triumph. It wraps radical demands in the soft language of European-style social democracy. But the resemblance is misleading. Unlike Europe’s Social Democratic parties, which operate comfortably within free market economies and reject Marxist class conflict, the American progressive left is anti- capitalist and embraces identity-based Marxism, recasting social conflict in terms of race, ethnicity, and gender. Today, that rebranding is no longer confined to universities or activist circles—it is shaping electoral outcomes. The rise is not an aberration, but the culmination of a movement decades in the making.
The Radical Roots
"In the 1960s, radical groups like Students for a Democratic Society, the Weather Underground, and the Black Panthers openly called for dismantling America’s political and cultural framework. Their rhetoric—violent, confrontational, and contemptuous of American identity—alienated the public. The Left learned a crucial lesson: they could not win by storming the gates. California Goes Groucho On Gasoline
Doing almost any sort of business in California has become an arduous task due to a crippling regulatory regime, high taxes and suffocating mandates. Doing business as a politically unfavored industry is even more difficult.
"What did California officials think was going to happen when they decided it was a dazzlingly brilliant idea to hound the oil industry out of the state? That magic would take over and there would be no consequences for their rash decisions?
"Apparently, they weren’t thinking at all, because, according to reports, the California Energy Commission (CEC) is looking for a buyer who will take over one of the refineries that’s being abandoned by a company that’s had enough of being beaten up by Sacramento. Their confidence in their crusade to green out the state seems to have been replaced by panic.
"To paraphrase the great Groucho Marx, they have values, and when those wreck things, they have others.
"Based on the statements of three sources, Reuters reported last week that the CEC is actively shopping Valero Energy’s Benicia refinery near San Francisco. The facility, with a 145,000-barrel-per-day capacity, is scheduled to close in April, and is one of several refineries that will be shuttered across the state. Later this year, Phillip’s 66 is closing its refinery complex, which has sites in Wilmington and nearby Carson. It will be the fourth California refinery to close since 2020. The announcement was made mere days after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill X2-1, granting the state the power “to require oil refiners to maintain a minimum inventory of fuel to avoid supply shortages.” The law also limits “higher profits for the industry,” and authorizes the bureaucracy to force “refiners to plan for resupply during refiner maintenance outages.”
"Valero is also considering closing its refinery in Wilmington, which can produce 85,000 barrels a day. The refining capacity of the two Valero sites is a little more than 14% of the state’s total.
"By this time next year, there might not be even a dozen refineries left in the state to produce the 38 million gallons of California’s boutique blend that’s consumed every day. This special mix is unique to the state. It’s not made anywhere else, and costs more than gasoline manufactured and sold outside the state lines. Should oil companies elect to use their refineries in other states to make it, they would have to invest billions to upgrade their systems." . . .

"Who could have guessed that The New York Times’ “conservative” columnist would be a pompous idiot, except anyone who’s ever seen the in-house conservatives at ABC, NBC, CBS, The Washington Post, etc., etc.
"I was tricked into reading a column by “conservative” Ross Douthat by its title, “Conspiracies Are Real. The Theories Can Be Traps.” It’s a point I’ve often made myself. Of course, there are conspiracies. Political parties are conspiracies, businesses are conspiracies, sports teams are conspiracies.
"Other than noncontroversial conspiracies, like political parties, business enterprises and the fact that Big Tech was censoring conservatives like mad from 2020 until Elon bought Twitter, the silly conspiracy theories involve vastly complicated, man-behind-the-curtain, super-secret operations — like UFOs manipulating humankind, Obama being the mastermind of everything the Democrats do, “they” (the media? the FBI?) orchestrating the assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, and of course, the Jews.
"So yeah, there are loads of real conspiracies, it’s the wacko theories that take things off the rails.
"But that’s not Douthat’s point. His point mainly seems to be to remind me why I don’t read him.
