Hammer attacks, track shoves and fatal stabbings: Out-of-control violent crime on NYC subways spiked 50% in the 12 months before today's subway shooting

  • After a gunman injured 16 at the 36th Street subway station, those using ridesharing services to leave the Sunset Park area were met with sky-high fares
  •  Some users reported paying double the typical rate amid the chaos
  •  Four hours after the shooting, Uber tweeted that it had capped pricing citywide, with Lyft following suit
  • A manhunt is still underway for the 36th Street Station shooter, who shot 10 and injured six more with smoke bombs during rush hour on Tuesday

"At least six people were stabbed on NYC subways after NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced his new Subway Safety Plan"

"The suspect, believed to be a man in his 30s, was described as wearing a colorful vest over a gray hoodie. He has not been arrested as of Monday morning. 

"Sunday's incident capped off a violent weekend, which saw at least five other people assaulted in the subway system in a span of 48 hours. 

"On Friday evening - just hours after Adams and Hochul unveiled a new subway safety plan - a man was slashed in the forearm at the Briarwood subway station in Queens and was hospitalized in stable condition, reported NBC New York. 

"At around 3 a.m. on Saturday, a 46-year-old homeless man was stabbed multiple times in the thigh and buttocks during a robbery attempt at Jamaica station in queens

"About 12 hours later, a man punched a 20-year-old woman on the 3 train platform at Livonia and Van Siclen Avenue in Brooklyn. An argument ensued, during which police say the male attacker pulled out a knife and stabbed the woman three times in the abdomen. The victim was hospitalized in stable condition.

"At around 8.30 p.m. on Saturday, a 24-year-old man was standing on the A-C-E platform in the 168th Street station in Manhattan when police say he was stabbed by two teens during a botched robbery attempt.". . .

BROOKLYN SUBWAY SHOOTING - WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

  • Unidentified gunman wearing grey hoodie and green construction vest opened fire on northbound N train at 8.24am 
  • He is known to the FBI, having been on their radar in New Mexico until he was cleared following 'multiple interviews' in 2019 
  • He is believed to have travelled from New Mexico, and then rented a U-Haul in Philadelphia
  • That U-Haul was found five miles from the scene on King's Highway, Brooklyn 
  • A credit card found on the scene of the shooting matched the credit card used to rent the U-Haul 
  • The suspect put on a gas mask then detonated a smoke bomb that was in his bag before firing the first shots
  • Panicked commuters tried to flee into the next subway car but the door was locked - they were trapped until the train reached 36th street 
  • The gunman somehow vanished in the chaos - some fear he may have jumped onto the tracks and entered the subway tunnels 
  • Police found a .380 handgun and three extended magazines in backpack at the Brooklyn station  
  • Sixteen people were taken to NYC hospitals - ten were shot, four suffered smoke inhalation and another two were in shock 
  • NYPD is going door-to-door in Brooklyn asking for information, surveillance camera footage and pictures
