It’s Time to Tell the Story of the Civil War Once More

. . . "April 9 marks the 160th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, but practically no one is talking about it. The Civil War has been banished, exiled – practically erased from cultural memory today.

"That’s a shame, because just as I should not hate the German people and German things – including my Volkswagen, Von Braun, the Interstate Highway system, Krups appliances, and much, much more – so should American citizens not hate and seek to erase portions of our entire historical narrative as a nation, especially the story of the Civil War.

"Everyone these days is talking about Civil Rights, and rightfully so; the story bell of Civil Rights should be rung and rung and rung.

"But so should the story bell of the Civil War.

"After all, the Civil War was the “Morningstar” of the Civil Rights Movement since it achieved the first freedom from slavery for black Americans, fulfilling the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation. Truly, it was a decisive first victory for Civil Rights. Done.

"It’s amazing to me that so many scholars have missed this critical point – or maybe they are in willful denial of the truth of it. Trying to erase it only makes things worse in the end; this history is as important as the rest of the history of our great land.

"It was very unfortunate that many Civil War statues were destroyed during recent uprisings – and also very sad that key military installations were renamed due to “wokeness,” as they were great teaching tools for learning about the past, in every respect – good and bad. Likewise, the controversy over the Confederate Battle Flag does not erase it from the story of the war and its appropriate places for display and use.

"We urgently need to begin telling the complete story of the Civil War once again in all schools, colleges, and universities. It deserves to be written about and discussed in films depicting it’s richly textured history so that the account may be known today and preserved for future generations. All historic Civil War battlefields, museums, landmarks, sites, and places – on both sides – should be venerated, while the stories of all the actors in the Civil War should be told, restored as significant candidates for research and study. Parents, teachers, and all citizens would do well to become students of its full history, as well as patrons of Civil War museums, battlefields, landmarks, sites, and battle re-enactments in order to teach the next generation about how this critical event helped forge our nation.

"So tell the story of the Civil War. Tell it in its fullness, letting history speak for itself. Tell about how providential it was as an agent for freeing black Americans from the evil of institutional slavery. Tell it alongside the story of Civil Rights, letting these two great stories inform each other, enriching the story of America, and why America’s greatness has survived and overcome suffering, injustice, bloodshed – and even war against itself."

So get ready for a lot of journalists to "break the news" that we all saw with our eyes for some time. Also get ready for a lot of journalists to write books and cash in on his condition. Everybody's been cashing in on Joe Biden, from his family to the people we trusted to cover him.

The latest testimony comes from George Stephanopoulos, of War Room fame and host of  ABC 's This Week on Sunday morning. He is now telling us what he saw:

ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos reportedly said his post-debate interview with former President Joe Biden was "heartbreaking up close." 

Chris Whipple's new book, titled "Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History," which was released on Tuesday, recounted behind-the-scenes conflicts between members of the Democratic Party and the Biden administration over whether Biden needed to step out of the race after his disastrous debate with then-candidate Donald Trump on June 27.

To "staunch the bleeding" of Democrats beginning to publicly call for replacing Biden on the ticket, Whipple wrote about how the White House accepted an interview with the "This Week" host on July 5 to reassure the public about the president’s candidacy. 

Whipple described Biden as "hoarse and semi-coherent" throughout the interview and said Stephanopoulos was equally disappointed. 

"Stephanopoulos questioned the president gently, like a grandson," 

Whipple wrote. "Afterward, when I asked the ABC anchor by email for his impressions, he replied: ‘Heartbreaking up close.’"

"Tesla CEO Elon Musk described the doxxing site as an example of “extreme domestic terrorism;” the White House agreed. In the Department of Justice’s press release announcing charges against three suspected Tesla arsonists, Attorney General Pam Bondi warned would-be criminals, “if you join this wave of domestic terrorism against Tesla properties, the Department of Justice will put you behind bars.”

"Musk and the White House agree that those targeting Tesla are committing domestic terrorism. And to most normal people that seems obvious. But with its intricacies, federal terrorism law may not be the best tool to hold them accountable. Instead, states should take the lead and enforce their own laws against the Tesla arsonists.

"The DOJ has so far indicted three suspects for destroying, or trying to destroy, Tesla property. Each faces arson-related charges and is accused of using Molotov cocktails in the commission of his crime.
"The three alleged crimes were connected with a coordinated campaign against Musk and Tesla. In February, The Hill reported that “Democratic activists” were “planning a protest campaign” against Musk, which would be held “outside offices of lawmakers and Tesla dealerships.” One element of this effort  was the “Tesla Takedown,” a nominally “peaceful protest” against “Musk’s illegal coup.” The Takedown was co-sponsored by the Troublemakers, a Seattle-based “community” focused on “direct action,” and The Disruption Project, a group “dedicated to supporting uprisings, resistance and mass direct action.”

"This campaign may have contributed to the three criminal incidents charged by DOJ. But are these crimes domestic terrorism, as defined under federal law?

"On the one hand, the statutory definition of domestic terrorism seems to say so:

activities that— (A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State; (B) appear to be intended— (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and (C) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.

"Since federal law defines a Molotov cocktail as a weapon of mass destruction, the case for the defendants’ actions meeting this definition seems relatively straightforward. Progressives will claim that setting fire to an unoccupied vehicle is not “dangerous to human life.” But the DOJ could reasonably argue that carrying and throwing firebombs imperils people’s lives.

"Legally speaking, though, not everything that meets this statutory definition can be prosecuted as a violation of the federal crime of terrorism. Rather, per 18 USC § 2332b(g)(5), a conviction requires that the government prove that an individual accused of terrorism committed one or more predicate crimes. Arson is one of these predicate crimes, but the statute’s terrorism label applies only to arson incidents that involve government property, interstate commerce, or certain maritime or critical infrastructure facilities.

"This may seem like pedantry to those on the right, who, to paraphrase Supreme Court justice Potter Stewart, know domestic terrorism when they see it. But radical leftists know the legal minutiae well and makes tactical choices accordingly. They know they can commit arson and avoid federal terrorism charges, as long as they don’t target federal property. This as opposed to other, more obvious terror methods, like hijacking an airplane, which always involve a federal nexus.

"These nuances explain many violent activists’ preference for fire. A DHS report on eco-terrorism, for example, reported 239 arson or bombing attacks conducted by eco-terrorists between 1995 and 2010. The Earth First! Journal, which calls itself the “voice of the radical environmental movement,” noted in 2020 that fire is “firmly back in the activist’s toolbox.” Why? Because it’s easier to dodge a federal terrorism charge when using a Molotov.

"Rather than the feds, state governments should step in to hold these and other anti-Tesla demonstrators accountable. States should enforce, or amend as needed, their own terrorism and racketeering laws. States can more easily revise their statutes than Congress, and they can fill in gaps in federal law to ensure that the Left’s preferred predicate crimes can be prosecuted as terrorism or racketeering. Additionally, state courts may prove more sympathetic venues than federal courts, as demonstrated by the recent $660 million verdict against Greenpeace for its role in disrupting construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

"The Trump administration can also actively assist state investigations through the operation of Joint Terrorism Task Forces. This model has helped secure terrorism convictions in the past. In Arizona, for example, federal and state officers cooperated to convict Mahin Khan, an ISIS supporter, on state charges of Terrorism, Conspiracy to Commit Terrorism, and Conspiracy to Commit Misconduct Involving Weapons, because the state terrorism statute was more broadly applicable.

"For conservatives, denouncing “domestic terrorism” on social media may be emotionally satisfying. But the real goal—holding these criminals to account, disrupting their networks, and forcing the Left to address the terroristic nature of such behavior—can be better served by state-level prosecutions."

Leftist judges aren’t doing these gymnastics in just gun cases. Judge Boasberg is turning backflips in immigration cases where he doesn’t even have the authority to rule. Welcome to NewSpeak, where up is down.

. . ."For example, Congress explicitly ordered that immigration cases have to go through immigration courts. The appeal from those courts is through the Circuit Court of Appeals, bypassing petty tyrants such as James Boasberg, who, if you’ve been listening, isn’t on an Immigration court. He’s a judge in a District Court, the level that Congress said should never see an immigration case. There’s also good authority that, when it comes to alien enemies, the courts are out of the picture entirely. But the Supreme Court sits on its thumbs." . . .

But:...Supreme Court Vacates Judge Boasberg’s TROs As To Tren de Aragua Under Alien Enemies Act   . . ."I’d call this a partial win for the government. The desire to whisk TdA members out of the country will be subject to judicial review, though it’s unclear what that will look like. At a minimum, the detainee will get to argue that he is not a member of the gang and the government likely will have to prove (not sure by what standard) that the person is a TdA member. So this is likely to slow down the process.

"But at least the case is away from Judge Boasberg and future district shopping in detainee cases will be difficult.

But can a Judge who never should have had the case in the first place and whose order (turn the planes around) was grossly improper hold someone in contempt for not complying with the order?

Major victory from SCOTUS in Trump deportation case  . . ."Several aspects of this decision should reasonably be seen as encouraging in this ongoing clash between the Judiciary and the Executive, including the fact that the chief justice came down on the side of the conservative wing  of the Court, the fact that Judge Boasberg has been well and truly removed from at least this part of the battle, and the fact that there is at least a small light of clarity being shown by the High Court, indicating that it is ready to start reining in some of the lower courts.

"One can only hope that its next pronouncement will spell the end of the use of totally illegal and unconstitutional “nationwide” injunctions, which have no legal basis whatsoever.

Where were all the ‘protesters’ during Biden’s years in office?

"They protest deaths from guns, but didn’t seem to be bothered by the thousands who died trying to make it across the border because Biden didn’t enforce the law. They also celebrate the shooting death of the United Healthcare CEO.

"They claim they care about children who are separated from parents, but did they raise a stink when the Biden administration lost track of over 300,000 children?

"They don’t even protest when illegals take jobs from citizens and lower wages, especially for minorities.

"The protesters are mad about federal workers being let go, but they didn’t protest when Biden and others dictatorially ordered that they take an experimental “vaccine” or get fired."...

"They protest that Musk is an unelected bureaucrat and shouldn’t essentially be doing anything, yet they don’t protest when unelected bureaucrats make rules and spend massive amounts of money not specifically authorized by Congress. They also haven’t complained that unelected bureaucrats were essentially running the White House while Biden was sleeping. They haven’t even raised concerns that people with autopens were signing all sorts of things instead of Biden."

Here sits the American people, most doubtless blissfully unaware that were Democrats and the larger American Left to get their way in opposing President Trump and Elon Musk, their Social Security benefits would, in fact, be in trouble down the road.

"These stories were all over the media. The NY Post version reports:

Tens of thousands of protesters descended on D.C. Saturday as part of nationwide “Hands Off!” rallies against spending cuts from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency and President Trump’s new “Liberation Day” tariffs — with one speaker calling on the crowd to make the two men “afraid.”

The huge crowd assembled with homemade — and in many cases vulgar — anti-Republican signs near the Washington Monument while similar events unfolded in New York City, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

“Trump and Musk, who want to be dictators and want to be kings and lords, they are afraid of the power of love and truth and justice!” declared activist minister William Barber II, who was one of the first speakers at the D.C. event.

“ 'They are afraid of your unity and diversity. Well, let’s keep them afraid until they change,” he roared. “This is an outright battle for civilization! We are not going to bow to power drunk neofascist extremists.”

"Unsurprisingly, the “Hands Off” groups have it exactly backwards. (And they were here in my area of Harrisburg, Penn., on the steps of the State Capitol.)

"Now, as has been true throughout a good bit of American history, it is the Left that is in reality “power drunk neofascist extremists.” The “activist minister” quoted in that Post is a longtime Leftist, William Barber II.

"Protest, of course, is an all-American and decidedly cherished First Amendment value. So no problem there.

"But to protest means that the subject of the protest should be examined, and examined closely. And in this case, the “Hands Off” crowd has it exactly backwards.

Jasmine Crockett Made Another Awful Comment on Race, Immigration

Crockett herself has made race her identity, as she went viral last week for comments during a House committee hearing that she was hired as a public defender despite having no criminal defense experience because as she told her boss, it was "because [she's] black." 

"Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) has been in the news quite a bit for racist comments as well for her comments on immigration. She hasn't stopped and it doesn't look like she'll stop any time soon. It didn't take long for comments of hers that she made at the 125th anniversary event at Grace Baptist Church in Waterbury, Connecticut on Sunday to have her trending once more over X.

. . ."Last month, Crockett also made headlines for participating in an event that took place the same day as President Donald Trump's speech before a joint session of Congress. During the "24-Hour State of the People Marathon," a virtual event meant to serve as a protest, Crockett claimed that Republicans are cracking down on illegal immigration because Trump wants to make black people "go back to the fields!' " . . .
