"The U.S. women’s soccer team got its World Cup action going Friday with a 3-0 win over Vietnam.
"It was an impressive opening win for the two-time defending world champs, and there were many fans in the country happy to see them get the quest for a third straight title going so smoothly. But much of the discussion since has not been focused on the impressive performance, but what took place prior to the start of the game. That’s because during the playing of the national anthem, many of the U.S. women simply stared ahead as “The Star Spangled Banner” was played.
"Five players stood with their hands over their hearts, and three sang along with the song. "The rest mostly kept their hands behind their back."
"The list of players who remained silent included Megan Rapinoe, who told Yahoo Sports ahead of the 2019 World Cup that she would probably never sing the national anthem again."
