Bosnia didn’t fall apart because it was Balkan. It fell apart because it was polarized.

"Before the war:
• Bosnia had intermarriage.
• Mixed towns.
• Shared businesses.
• Shared schools.
• Shared military service.
"Sarajevo was called “the Jerusalem of Europe” because Muslims, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians lived together peacefully for generations.
"Then politics hardened.
"Parties radicalized.
