Yesterday was not a defeat for me or the Democrat Party; it was a victory for America. 

Once again we've shared our views in a vigorous debate full of the friendly fury free speech encourages, and the people have decided. 

Some pundits and some politicians may claim we lost, but in a larger sense, we may have lost a few contests, but we won the larger war. 

Yesterday, we won what some have called "the war on women." Though the GOP picked up some seats they picked them up by running MORE women then they had ever done before. As a result of the Democrat Party pushing the feminist issue, American now has more women in higher office than ever before - and that's good for America. 

 Some pundits complained that we "played the race card" too much the last 6 years. I disagree. I think that despite all the gains this nation has made since the 1960's, we forcefully brought the issue back into focus and as a result the GOP ran and elected more people of color than at any time since Reconstruction. This is good for America.

 Some pundits claim we lost so many seats because most people feel our economy is still in the doldrums. There's always a lag-time between the real economy and how people feel about it. I am sure that in the next year - before the 2016 election begins - people will be forced to accept that we brought the economy back from the brink. That may be little too late for my colleagues who lost yesterday, but it will be a huge bonus for us in 2016. When so much more is at stake.

 

So though I am saddened to see so many friends leave, I am humbled and pleased that the progressive agenda of the Democratic Party has been so successful and that in a deeper sense we truly won the day.

I look forward to working with the new majority leader next year on a new agenda we can all embrace. Until then, there's a lot of work that needs to be done - this term, this week, this moment.

His unpopularity was not in doubt, and his responsibility for manifold governmental failures over the last several years was undeniable. And yet, GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell still deserves a large share of the credit for what may seem like an obvious anti-Obama election. How McConnell outsmarted the president and saved the Senate (at least temporarily) is one of the midterms’ more fascinating subplots." ...

As Jonathan Tobin mentioned late last night, McConnell belongs at the top of the list of winners, while Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid is second only to Obama in the losers column.

"One of the phrases that irritates me about politics is when the phrase “we shouldn’t legislate morality” is uttered. Usually, that person does mean well (ie. supporting a separation of church and state), but it doesn’t diminish the fact that the phrase itself is ignorant. I would argue that a free liberal society must legislate morality if it is remain both a liberal society and a free society. All laws are is the morality of a society that is written down, therefore you cannot make laws if you’re not legislating morality.

"I’m a classical liberal, which means I believe that the only moral purpose of government is to defend life, liberty, and property. I also believe in things such as pluralism, tolerance, the advancement of science and technology, realism, and reason. I want the morality of society to recognize these things in the laws that are made by the government that is supposed to represent us all. In fact, I would go even further to argue that moral relativism and liberty cannot coexist."
