Sen. Kamala Harris, California Democrat, ignited fireworks on social media by stating in a Fourth of July tweet that the Declaration of Independence was signed by “eight immigrants.”
“A reminder this Fourth of July: it was eight immigrants who signed the Declaration of Independence. Happy Independence Day,” said Ms. Harris, whose message was echoed by others."
The Declaration of Independence had 56 signers, eight of whom were born in Great Britain: Two each born in England, Ireland and Scotland; one born in Northern Ireland, and one born in Wales, according to History.com." . . .

Here you are out there talking about how great the Declaration of Independence is, we gotta celebrate it, but you don’t like privileged white guys, if I listen to you day in and day out.

Do you think government’s powers derive from the consent of the governed, i.e., voters? Or do you think it comes from the Supreme Court?

"I mean, if she embraces the Declaration, that’s great. I just don’t hear her, day in and day out, talk like she much understands it. Or that she supports it as she understands it."

“If you’re looking at it from the pure legalistic perspective, then she is right to some extent, that simply being here without legal status is not a crime. It doesn’t make you a criminal,” said David Bier, immigration policy expert at the libertarian Cato Institute. “But many undocumented immigrants have committed criminal violations of immigration law, and there’s nothing wrong with pointing that out. There’s no discord between saying that, and that you think that we should provide a pathway to citizenship, in order to allow them to live here without having to break the law.”
