He said: 'I've taken care of the White House. I've fixed it with the finest artisans in the world. The White House is now in the best shape it's been since 1792 when it was built. It's in beautiful shape. You take a look at it, it looks beautiful, and I'm proud to do it.'
. . . "Since returning to the White House last year, President Donald Trump has demolished the East Wing to make way for a 90,000sq ft ballroom, installed a granite helipad on the South Lawn, paved over the lawn of the Rose Garden with a stone patio and erected a 'Walk of Fame.'
"There have been so many new gold embellishments – including a 24-karat trim to crown moldings, doorframes and seals in both the Oval Office and the Cabinet Room – that former President Barack Obama has said he thinks his successor has 'the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.'
"'He should be on HGTV,' Obama said of Trump while stumping at a midterm rally in Ohio last weekend.
"Those jokes brought in a flood of Republican criticisms, like from Vice President JD Vance, who said: 'Obama, without even trying to be, just can't help himself for being super elitist.'
"Here was snooty Obama poking fun at the ever-affordable Cheesecake Factory, a beloved American restaurant chain where diners can gorge themselves on infamously gargantuan portions without breaking the bank (a $12 slice of cheesecake can weigh up to half a pound)." . . .
. . . "It's almost hard to know where to look when you walk in.
"At the 18-foot-tall marble columns? The gilded trim? The tall archways? Or the chandeliers? Perhaps your eyes trail up to the fantastical gold-detailed ceilings. Maybe they fall towards the black-and-white checkered floor." . . .
. . . "He's swapped out the greenery on the mantle of his office for a row of elaborate gold vessels. He's dressed the fireplace, ceiling and crown moldings with bright metallic gold appliqués. He's also heavily decorated the gallery wall with ornate gold frames and decor.
"Trump, for his part, said the White House 'was in terrible shape' until he 'reskinned the building beautifully with the highest, most talented people anywhere in the world.'
"He said: 'I've taken care of the White House. I've fixed it with the finest artisans in the world. The White House is now in the best shape it's been since 1792 when it was built. It's in beautiful shape. You take a look at it, it looks beautiful, and I'm proud to do it.'"
